Whatever dude. On re-reading the thread I can't find any posts against EB in jazz. Just people trying to help. Lets remember, his posts have been full of distain for the DB in a forum for DB players. Very few flames for the attitude he's exhibited.

I'm about as prejudiced as it comes but I checked my attitude at the door. I'll be glad to share it though. Walking on EB gives me hives. There I said it.

Swami out.

The op said that his instructor was acting prejudicial to electric bass. Maybe read the original post again. Also I don't think your prejudices were parked at the door. Music should be bigger than bigotry. Nobody believed in the piano when it began to compete with the harpsichord. Personally I like both. With regard to basses I also like both. My advice to take the learning of double bass as a challenge is the nub of my argument. My secondary argument is to not take crap from elitist instructors who promote these values in their students.

Very mature. A big contribution by you. You must have tired your tiny brain.

You set 'em up, I gotta whack 'em.

I did check your profile, I didn't see anything that suggests you have any double bass experience. I did see your other thread asking how long TBers had been in the game, which then excluded double bassists. It turns out I was playing both basses for a long time before you. Just saying. When a guy with only slabs on his TB dossier waltzes into the DB forum and tells someone to "ace the double bass course" when the guy don't wanna play it in the first place.... c'mon, man. I just haveta.

We have only the OP's observations regarding his instructors' beliefs concerning the relative merits of BG, and given his age and the oft-commented upon attitude evident in his posts, I'm not convinced we can take this for granted.

Anyhow, he hasn't been back in a while, and this argument hardly seems worth pursuing.

Don't forget, George Mraz has been living and working in NYC for years. Many of the European jazz bassists came up with killer classical training, as did Eddie Gomez.

Good point -- moreover, I suspect the increasingly globalised exposure to music, video, etc, etc, relative ease of international travel, yaddita, yaddita, maybe it makes less and less sense to speak of national styles as jazz has become more and more an international medium.

Have been playing upright for 20 years. You probably ought to have noticed that I have a Phd in music. I have taught jazz studies for a time at university and will waltz into any forum I wish to with greater credentials than you and a hatred of musical snobbery.
The best revenge is success. Either the op tries his best or changes his degree. How many degree course programmed have you written?

Oh your profile says you like George Benson. Theres a least a tiny point in your favor. As to qualifications to advise. Nil.

Oh I forgot. Your expression 'only slabs' shows exactly why your views are beneath consideration.

Here's something to ponder. I wonder why you rarely see guys who often contribute to the double bass forum venture over to the electric bass side and proceed to dump all over everybody on that side and belittle their preferences in music? I have some ideas but I think the main reason is MATURITY. In general, most of us are very aware of what it takes to play the double bass well and we are also aware that playing jazz is a life long pursuit which usually involves more than just a passing knowledge of melody, harmony and chord structures. On the other hand, plugging in an electric geetar and learning "Brown Eyed Girl" can be accomplished in an afternoon. I will say that to be able to play the electric well, say at the studio musician level, will take a lot of time and effort. However, I never see that type of electric player venture over here onto the double bass side and proceed to poke at us like a kid hitting a hornets nest with a stick. What I do see is guys that are usually very young, pretty entitled and almost unknowingly disrespectful that almost always have a proclivity and an uncanny innate ability to act like a bunch of tools! Like my mom used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say......"
@Marcus, Friggin Hilarious comeback for MR. BuT Haole

It's interesting that there is no double bass listed in your profile. You play double bass or you played double bass?
Any links to sound clips or degree course syllabi.
Do teach the waltz?
