Are 20" speakers a myth?

I'm working on the plans to build a very creative stack and a 20" speaker is required. I've heard of them but never found any. What's the scoop?

18" and 21" are the standard sizes. Those are frame sizes, so a 21" driver will have an actual cone size pretty close to 20".

Here are a few to get you started.

It's a washer dryer stack. Working on it over time. Thanks for the info.

Care to cite any inspirations? ;):bassist:

Those things have enormous frames and surrounds. The first one there, the Beyma 21PW1400Fe, has a surface area of 0.1734m2 which works out to a cone radius of 9.25 inches and 18.5 inch diameter. It also weighs about 44 pounds. Yikes !

OK, maybe the OP would prefer one of Invalid Link Removed since those 21s are a little shy...;)

Hey Rube! Welcome to TalkBass!

Let me be the first to open the can of worms that will undoubtedly be opened.

Why do you think you need such a big speaker? Bigger speakers don't produce lower notes any better than well designed 4-10 cabs (just as an example). So, you won't be "adding bass" to your rig just by putting a big honking speaker in your rig.

AH! Sorry, I didn't realize you LITERALLY meant a washer dryer stack. I though that was just some sort of slang term for a particular kind of stack of speakers.

Never mind. Carry on!

(Welcome to TalkBass anyway.........)

Hmmm...
I wonder why manufacturers waste their time designing, building and marketing different sized drivers?
I suppose they just don't know any better. :smug:

We have about 3 dozen 21" woofers, loaded in Turbosound TSW 721 cabs.
They thump, particularly in groups of 20+.

BUT!!! Think of all the money we could have saved just in cartage alone over the past decade if we had bought "well designed 4-10 cabs" instead! ;)

. . . I'd personally use a more commonly available 18", on a round baffle if the visual diameter isn't large enough. . .

That is a good idea.

You could design it with more conventional front and paint it flat black. Then design the washer/dryer elements as a faux front with whatever opening was appropriate. You wouldn't be able to tell where the speaker edge ended and the cabinet started from more that a few few away. Plus, if you ever decided that having a washer/dryer was not ideal for your stage performance, you could remove the faux front and still have a usable cabinet.
