Are BC rich good?

They were!!!!

However too many other companies are stepping up to the plate and knocking it out of the park for the pricepoint.

To the OP:

If you want to own something for the historical perspective it has then by all means. If you HAVE to own a BC Rich for some reason then don't let me or anyone else stand in the way of a dream....get in there and get what you want and have a blast with it.

I can't comment too much on BC Rich, but I wanted to weigh in that I have played a Lakland 55-01 natural, a Modulus VJ burst tort, and a Rick 4003 in metal bands and they all sounded great to me. I'm not saying don't buy a metally looking bass, but I wouldn't let any opinion narrow down your choices except your own. really, a Modulus would be my first choice if I was walking in to a metal gig tomorrow, but thats me. Then again, if your band doesn't really feature the bass and its tone, I'd give the look a bit more importance than I might otherwise.

I can say, as a former US-made Eagle owner (mid 80s Koa), that these were really nice basses back in the day. They had I think the thinnest necks available. Super fast. Badass bridge. Grover tuners. Nice worksmanship. Really good passive sound.

Can't say anything about what they are like now. But they have always really been geared towards a certain kind of look.

Don't come on any forum and ask an opinion unless you want to see something you like get flamed. The people against what you have will be more vocal than the people who like it. Do your own comparison and come to your own conclusion. Some companies can have a dog come off the assembly line right beside a jewel. I have a $100 Vinci that, until recent neck problems, played great (I'm putting a Warmoth neck on it soon). Go to your nearest music store and try out everything you can and get what fits you. Nothing wrong with a BC Rich unless your taste is a little conservative.

Well, BC rich may well have upgraded its offering, or they made a one-off to show everyone that they used to be cool; I would *really* like to hear that they have come back to the US and are making instruments like they used to - but I have not. But again, that picture is of what I'm guessing is a recreation of a very old (and very cool) 8 string bass that I *dearly* wanted when I was a kid... or it's a re-furbed model that was just on display. I don't know - didn't go this year.

My experience on a warbeast was like heaven(if it was a 5 string i would have buy it) it can goe trough all type of tone! So it can be very good.

A few things to consider when buying any bass are. Run your hand up and down the neck and if you feel the frets then pass on that bass. Also speaking of being neck heavy, try the bass while wearing a strap. And if it does a nose dive to the ground chances are that it will be awckward to play. I would check out used and other brand names in that price range before making a decision. I have been looking at the BC rich Mockingbird based on its look. But I really don't know much about the model you are asking for. Good luck and BE PATIENT!!!!

As far as sound goes, in my personal humble opinion, it does not get any better than a pair of reversed Dimarzio P-pickups... and this is coming from a die-hard Precision lover.

Shapes are a matter of preference... one person's ugly is another person's beautiful. As far as balance, it is all over the board with these... I have never had a bass that balances better than my Wave, but my Mockingbird is a neck-diver. Personally, I like the neck divers, it inspires me to do something other than just stand there with my bass... if my bass is moving, I might as well move with it. :)

Forgive me, i was just simply saying, from personal experience, and I OWN a BC Rich WMD widow, and i meant to answer the questions asked by the OP'er.
Instead of just recommending him an ESP/LTD/Ibanez/Schecter, And I have played ESP/LTD's/Ibanez's/Schecters:
If you want THIS Bass for metal, it will work.
I'm sorry everybody has gotten so upset over this. :eyebrow:

My Warlock has full electronics, and to be honest, I have it all set the way I like it and then do not touch anything, so given the choice, I prefer less knobs, too. The boost circuit sounds awesome thorough the right amp, though... like overdrive. I would imagine the boost would sound amazing with the eight string.
