No, no...barbecue sauce from McDonals on fries is the best.

Oh and I dont use any effects except for the occasional chorus or overdrive but its rare.

meh, not true in all cases. it increases the amount of knob twiddling, but I have plenty of time for bass AND knob twiddling. I say I have played at least 10x more bass than I have twiddled with knobs. and I have been a bit of an effects whore. Your comment is unfounded!

While effects can 'hide' bad technique, you can still hear the difference between good technique and bad when effects are on. IMO effects hide bad technique no better than a Hippo can hide an elephant... you can obviously still see it is there.

IMO the only difference between a bassist who uses effects and one who doesn't is that the one who does use them is willing to learn some new tricks and tools, while the one who emphatically doesn't use them is basically unwilling to learn or try anything new.

Note that I'm particularly referring to bassists who proclaim how they never use effects, or who sneer at those who use them. Obviously there is a greater percentage of bassists who may not be using effects at any one moment but who also don't care to identify themselves as non-users.

Unwilling to learn or try anything new? Not true at least for me, though I have never used any effects, it's just that there's plenty of room for expression and variety with the bass's natural tone by altering my touch and technique, to me adding any signal processing is distracting. But I don't sneer at effect users, if it works for them, fine. I'm basically a plug-in-and-play kinda bassist, I just show up with my trusty P bass, cord and amp and get the job done, simple and easy. Ah, the joy of being GAS-free.

my 2 cents:

I played for 30+ years before I bought a TC Electronics chorus/flange pedal.

Since I'm currently working in a trio, it offers the possibility of variety in the bands overall sound.

I use it sparingly on songs like "Riviera Paradise", and "Europa".
