Are finger players a dying breed

Depends on the sound and style man. I pretty much play fingers alot. But if I'm playing super fast stuff I use a pick. Especially islly if I want that clanking sound under everthing

Critical thinking is alive and well.
But the onset of everyone being critical of others' thinking seems to be overshadowing critical thinking.
In other words, many seem to think "If you don't think like me, you must not be thinking at all".
It's a sad state of affairs, honestly.
No way, but if you only listen to rock music you would get that impression. Pick is fine for rock as it gives a hard hitting sound, but when you need to go with subtle it's fingers all the way IMHO. I saw a Rock n Roll band last night, the bass player used a pick and nailed it for most of the time. But he kept that bit of plastic in his hand and tried to play Let's Dance with it and it sounded HORRIBLE. I would say if you want to play multiple genres but only want to go with one technique fingers is the way to go. If you are happy to do both then do both. But don't go pick only cos for some genres it's not ideal. OK heads down, here it comes!I just watched 2 hours of rock videos and not one bass player used his fingers. All pick players I have nothing against pick players I think it looks cool.i play only fingers the only picking I do is my noseI did notice that all of them were under 40 years of age. I guess a new generation thing or they were guitar players at one time
My wife & I watched the Wrecking Crew doc (highly recommended!) and she looked at me afterwards and asked why all the bass players used picks.
Hadn't thought about it until then, but Joe Osborne and Carol Kaye both used picks in the studio.
So I added a pick back into my repertoire.
Still 90% fingers, but for some songs, the pick is the right tool for the job.

rock music is why i get acrylic overlays applied to my nails. they're basically picks, thanks to the overlays, much thicker and harder than natural nails, and make a sound on the string more like a pick than a natural nail or fingertip.
When appropriate, each. You wouldn't expect to cop Rocco, Duck, or Jamerson with a pick, nor Squire or, (hmmm, can't seem to name a lot of pick players at the moment) lets go with Dee Dee Ramone using fingers. I mostly play finger style and there's a couple of tunes a night I switch to a pick to play those Berry Oakley lines where it's appropriate.
A year ago, all I played was rock (prog rock such as Rush, King Crimson, and Yes; and metal like Metallica, Tool, and Iron Maiden), and all I used was a pick.
Right now, I'm only playing jazz, funk, hip hop/R&B, amd Motown - I haven't touched a pick in months.

I play rock with fingers. Maybe some more clarification on what sort of rock you were listening to?

With my regular band (old farts playing 60's music) I maybe use a pick on 3 songs a night. Last night I subbed with a much younger high energy band, I used a pick on about 40% of the songs.
