Are Muffs Passé

I love Muffs.

That thick, creamy, classic sound.

The issue of course is that they get lost in a mix.

Using a blend and/or adding mids helps but then it changes what I love about Muffs.

That's the long and short of it for me.

... are muffs passé?
I think it's true to say not all muffs are created equal.
A muff focussed on us bass players (ie mid control, blend perhaps) can be fantastic.

The only gripe I would suggest, is that a lot of muffs fall into the smooth category. I prefer gritty for bass work, so the civil war/tall font variants with their grittier sound and traditionally better mids is my fave for bass. That said, it will depend heavily on which muff we're talking about, there is so much variation in muff's, even amongst one's that look exactly the same....

Too bad this thread came out like a day before the EHX Green Russian Reissue. I don't think it was a coincidence

Haha... I'm the OP and had no idea the EHX Green Russian was being released. I had just been thinking about all the muffs I've tried over the years and how I was now going through OCD derivatives, and wondered out loud about muffs being a thing of the past as new overdrives/distortions based on other circuits were being adopted by bass players.

I did recently buy a Black Arts Pharaoh (muff dirivarive) which I like a lot. But I also just bought a Fuzzrocious Demon (an OCD derivative) to compare with my ODB.
Can't stop, won't stop. :) Need a bigger board....
