Are my strings the (fretless) problem?

I'm playing a fretless (ebony FB) with DR Sunbeams. The guitar is new to me. There's a little too much string noise and not quite enough mwha for my liking. I've fiddled with all the electronic variables on both guitar and amp - to no avail. Any thoughts as to whether a different string choice might help?

Thanks in advance.

It's not strings. Your neck may be leaning back at a slight angle, that's what was wrong with mine. I rattles off the board, but not in a way that gives you mwah, it's just rattly.

There's no rattle or buzz. Just the sound of friction from the finger moving along the string. That sound is certainly less marked on my other basses - fretted and strung with Sadowsky blue rounds or Hi-beams.
