Are Peavey cabs any good?

I'm looking at one of their new Tour 810s and I was curious as to what the consensus was around here regarding Peavey's bass cabs. How do they compare sound-wise and build-wise to the other 810s out there? I did a search and didn't find much. Thanks!

It has more low end than a typical 8-10 because it's ported. I think it matches up better with solid state heads. It's made out of a new lightweight plywood and has neo speakers, so it weighs less than most 8-10s.

Not sure about the consensus, but I like the ancient Peavey cab I own.

Other than concerns about weight, there seems like there's a lot of love around TB for the Peavey TX and TVX series, and also the older 215s, especially the 215D version.

Either a tour 810 or a Tour 215 is on my short list (waiting on the convergence of both disposable income and absolute "I need a new cab right now" to happen simultaneously).

There seems to be a shortage of actual owner reviews though.

Peace. :bassist:

I normally like Peavey stuff, but their neo drivers have an abysmal linear excursion of 2.5mm. It is possible that Peavey is using a different neo driver in their tour line than the pro 10 neo that has the 2.5mm X-max. It is hard to tell because they list the drivers as "10" high-performance, NEO-powered bass loudspeakers" and not specifically as the pro 10 neo.

My only experience is with a 410TVX. It was heavy as hell but sounded GREAT!

I'll agree to that! I've had both 410TX & TVX, and hauling them around was a bit of a workout. But they really got the job done, and I had NO problems with them ever, despite the rough use they were submitted to over the years. BP reivewed a 410 some time ago (http://www.bassplayer.com/article/peavey-tour-series/nov-07/32249) and concluded that you definitely get bang for the buck. If it's not the case with the 810, then why not just 2 410s?;)

I had an old old old Peavey 215 which I did'nt like. It did'nt have the umph that in the lows that I had hoped for. Now I have a Peavey 410tx that i LOVE. I am a big fan of Peavey though, I have Peavey P.A. speakers that I have beat the **** out of w. a Crest LT1000 and even a Peavey Foundation '92.

I am only 33 and the thing is heavy. The $24 dolly I bought at home depot is a godsend. I suggest that you invest in one of those.

See the sig!

Opinion - Buy 2 4x10s .. or even a 2x10 + something else.. a big box is overkill for most places and tough to move... I can compete against a marshall with a 2x10 + 1x15.. then have the flex to use either cabinet.

Nobody beats Peavey Service..

This is not overpriced gear - it's stage band mix stuff.

I've owned tons of Peavey cabinets - well constructed - no failures.

For the buck to value nothing beats Peavey USA - your kids will inherit it.

Around my parts in the late 80's, Peavey cabinets were standard issue. They were good affordable cabinets that could withstand a moab hit. I havent played one in a long time, but my band's practice PA uses Peavey 1x18's as the subs and it sounds good.

Peavey cabs are cool. You can get them used for pretty much no money at all, and they sound great. The large 410 (dont know the name) is one punchy cab, but its friggen huge, and heavy.
The tweed 810 sounds great to.

Another +1 to what's been said about the TX and TVX. Great sounding, dirt cheap, reliable, but heavy as can be. Can't speak for the Tour series, but based on Peavey's reputation, I'd bet they sound good.

I've owned Peavey cabs in the past and I think that they are good cabinets. Peavey stuff in my experience is bulletproof. I've never had to have any Peavey gear I've owned serviced even after banging around in trailers. They make quality stuff. I don't think that the sound quality is as good as say Ampeg or other more expensive cabs but they hold their own no doubt.

Is the 810 ported, 'cause on the Peavey site it says it's sealed?

Thanks for all the replies guys, it looks like I can't go wrong picking up the 810 for $750.
