Are Sadowskys that awesome?

Another thing about Sadowsky is consistency. You get only hits; no misses. This is not the case with Fender or many other companies.

Additionally, Sadowsky's shielding and electronics are phenominal: super quiet. Yesterday and today I was recording Sadowsky standard 4 J bass->Kern preamp/DI-> RME AD/DA converters ->ProTools system in front of the computer monitor. No hum; no problem. And the bass recorded beautifully without diddling with EQ.

But there is always a market that will pay for prestige over performance and situations where the name on the headstock, or the amp, will get your foot in the door.

I suppose this may be true in some cases. I personally don't know what drives others to do what they do. In my case, my Sadowsky simply a great instrument - better than any other I've played. Roger's customer service is ourstanding. Since I can afford it, I will.

The fact is that in my case, maybe 1 out of 500 (or more) people where I play will have even heard of a Sadowsky, much less know anything of his reputation. If I wanted "prestige" by way of the "name on the headstock", I should have chose a Fender ;)

Yeah, Jeff, that's why I made sure I said, "a" market, because there are obviously players who would pick one out for their instrument just by hearing it.

As fr the rest, they remind me of a pimp that used to come into a bar where I hung out. This guy was pure flash and he would always order Courvoisier EXP (or something with letters after it) and coke.....one of the world's finest cognacs dosed with Coca-Cola!

Why someone would want to mess up a Coke is simply beyond me! :D I dated a girl whose family had to have wine with every dinner. Unless it was the "really good stuff", they mixed it with cream soda. Strange...

Damn, my Sadowsky bass is awesome! I recorded my bass as noted above and moderately emphasized the treble pickup with the blend pot, added a bit more bass and treble from the on-board preamp and it was Marcus Miller tone to the max, almost identical to the tones on The Sun Don't Lie. I couldn't believe how effortless it was to get this sound! And the bass sounded nice and even; no dead spots. If only my playing and licks could keep up with the instrument! I had heard Sadowsky basses record well but this is ridiculous. We're talking jaw-dropping tone! I really could not believe how good the bass sounded coming out of the monitors and headphones! :D :D

And thank goodness too because I just landed a movie soundtrack (small independent film) to score and record later this year.

Thanks, Jeff. The film is just being put together locally here in FL (South Beach and Moroso raceway) with script and casting in the works but they've given me the plot (race car theme in the genre of "The Fast & the Furious"). I don't anticipate getting to write and record for it until the fall according to one of the producers. Still, it was a nice surprise to get this project.

Lakland is weird. I e-mailed then 3 time because I wanted them to make a bass for me w/EMG J's & an Aguilsr OBP-1 pre-amp & I didn't get a response. If I were to e-mail Roger or Stuart just to say hi, I'd get a hi back. So that totally turned me away from Lakland. [/B][/QUOTE]

I have quite the opposite experience.
Lakland has given me top professional response.
Sadowsky was not at all responsive.

I live in Scandinavia and a while back before I was aware of Lakland I tried to order a Sadowsky from a local dealer who at the time was their appointed agent. I asked if I should pay a deposit he told me there was no need and that delivery might take up to 6 months. Ok so I ordered and waited.
After 6 months I called back to check out the situation. Guess what, no bass. I still don’t know why it never showed up. I called Mr Sadowsky in New York and he told me that I had to order trough his agent. So there I was. Catch 22 ?? An agent that does not function and the brush off from Sadowsky.

Later I had the opportunity to test out a Lakland deluxe 5 sting. Wonderful versatile bass, had to have it. I have travelled Europe from north to south with this bass and played a variety of styles under changing conditions. Never had a problem. I have now added a deluxe 4 string and a Joe Osborne to my arsenal.
Laklands are now the only basses I bring with me to a gig and my next purchase will be a fretless.
These basses together with the top professional services from the guys at Lakland provide for me what I need. (I had new strings dlivered within four days sent from Chicago to Oslo Norway.)

Sound like the original place you wanted to order it from never was a dealer. Did you ask Roger if that place was a dealer? Sounds to me that the original store gave you the runaround & not Roger because when you called Roger, it seemed like he want to help you get a bass.

I'm a nobody in the music industry. I visited Roger's shop 3 times & I was treated like Marcus Miller or Jason Newstead, etc.

P.S. I'm still waiting on those responses form Lakland. ;)

I had good experience with Lakland , I ordered 4 strings deluxe from him , Dan himself took care of me, we exchanged e-mail many many times without any problem. He promised me to send the bass on New Year eve 2000, and he did it. When the address he sent was wrong, he took it back and resent it. Dan personally is a very helpful and nice person and I am sure if you mail him he will treat you personally.
In my opinion Lakland and Sadowsky are good companies and they have excellent product to offer.
Both has a par workmanship, playability. For me Lakland is a little easier in the upper register due to deeper cutaway, and more tone versatility due to MM p.u. with coil switch, while Sadowsky has tone and punch and clarity I love .
I'd like to try Lakland fretless 4 or 5 see how good it is, anybody knows?

I am quite disturbed to read this post and I want to apologize to Badenough for this situation. Although I have always primarily sold direct to players, until three years ago, I had about 6-8 dealers in Europe and dealt with them exculsively for their respective countries. It is not easy to ask someone to order an expensive instrument from halfway around the world, sight unseen. While I don't remember the specifics of this situation, the dealer probably did not place the order or it got lost and when Badenough contacted me directly about the matter, I referred him back to the dealer in question.

However, during the last two years, I have been selling direct to Europe as the stronger US dollar has made my instruments too expensive going through dealers. 75% of my instruments are now sold direct, either from the in-stock page of my web site or built to order.

Again, I apologize to Badenough and I can assure all of you this was a rare occurance in Sadowsky customer service.

Roger

Roger

Apology accepted. I am aware that the “agent” was the problem in this case.
I am not one of the super bass players, just a regular guy that has been around for a while I love what I am doing and I still get quite a few jobs. I was just so very disappointed at the time when there was no bass for me after 6 months waiting and excitement. I was later told that he may have sold the bass in question to a local hot shot and just dropped me.

There is no doubt in my mind that you make some of the finest basses available today.
I have had the pleasure of trying out a couple during my visits to London

While I have never emailed Roger, I have emailed Dan Lakin and received a response within a day! I have the Lakland Joe Osborn model and it plays and sounds like a jazz should. I love this bass, and although I have not tried Sadowsky, I prefer my Lakland's looks to the Sadowsky. Just my opinion...

There's a thread in this section to the effect of "How much should I pay for a Sadowsky?" referring to a Sadowsky Vintage PJ5 in baby blue:alder body + Brazilian rosewood 'board. I played that bass at Roger's shop last May. That 5 string PJ bass sounded so good and played so darn easily I must have done a Linda Blair 360 suboccipital spin, Buckwheat jawdrop, and become incontinent... all at the same time. (Yeah, the little demo room was a mess.) It sounded unbelievable!!!!!!!! :D I'm incredibly happy with my Sadowsky 4 string jazz but if I ever get a second bass, no doubt it will be a Sadowsky PJ model.
