Who even watches that stuff? Every week the Hollywood elites are having some sort of award ceremony for themselves so they can give speeches that have nothing to do with their vocation or wheelhouse.

Just another in weekly awards shows that means little about art, and all about who is making the most money.
I've never watched the Grammys. The whole thing has always seemed like nothing but a showcase for the slick, boring, dancy crap that everyone seems to be so in love with, year after year after year. Maybe I'm wrong--maybe I've been missing some GREAT music all this time. But I doubt it.
That is exactly what it is. There is music out there that are tons ahead of some of the garbage passing for the Grammy award winning drivel. H.E.R.? R&B album of the year? Please! And why so many irrelevant performances?? It's more of a damn concert than award show. 3-1/2 hours of mostly crap with maybe 1 or 2 performances worth listening to by older more cultured artists with real talent.
But I think the Grammy's are driven by sales. So go figure. The youth today are into extremely watered down music driven by repeating loops. Everyone sounds like a frikkin' 15 year old. Where are the unique and interesting voices??

No, is just turn into the weird show . When the song of the year is some Rap song, I am finished. You tell me that people like that rap song more than other songs around?
I just bought tickets to the Chris Stapleton concert. The venue sold out in less than 45 minutes. I wonder if that rapper could sell out a large venue in 45 minutes every weekend?

I watched the first hour and half or so last night. I see it as a who/what/when/why snapshot- if I'm going to be out playing music, it doesn't hurt to be aware of the current state of the music industry. I also like looking for trends, such as singer with unnecessary guitar (Shawn Mendes and Janelle Monae, I'll throw Post Malone in there too, and H.E.R mostly redeemed herself). I'm also fascinated by the technical side of putting on something so huge, so I'll watch for staging/lights/sound/backing tracks/camera work. Who actually wins is maybe 4th on my list of things I find interesting (but hat tip to Casey Musgraves- I do enjoy Golden Hour).
You can't look at that list and say the Grammy's are just a popularity content. There are some incredibly popular individuals and bands on that list. Years of hits with radio play out he wazoo. Obviously the winners aren't chosen just by talent or popularity.
I'll sometimes watch just to see where pop music stands right now, sine I never listen to any of it any other time. I'm usually disappointed.
Both of my Grammy's have been gone for years. God rest their souls.

The Grammys, like the Oscars, Goldebn Globes, People's Choice, etc., are an advertising and promotion exercise. It is the music industry's night to get the public interested in buying the recordings.
It's coincidental when any music I like wins a Grammy. Now that I am old, grey and cranky I don't even recognize most of the artist names and of those I do recognize I have never heard most of them (Lady Gaga tops the list).
Of the winners, I have only heard the Kacey Musgraves album (good), the Childish Gambino tune (OK, but the video is a must-see) and the Andris Nelson/BSO recording of Shostakovich's 4th and 11th (good).
I was in NYC for the weekend a few months ago, and "that rapper" was doing 2 sold out nights at MSG.
Much like the Oscars, Grammys are not voted on by "the people." They're nominated and voted on by select members of the music industry.
