Are the Grammys still relevant?

I guess if you're into popular music/well-known musicians then The Grammys are relevant. The only modern active band I listen to is Mastodon. I think they're Grammy winners too but I wouldn't watch the award show if they were nominated again. Just not my thing. Nothing against those who like popular music or The Grammys.

I've never gotten why ordinary people should care about the <Grammys/Emmys/Oscars/GoldenGlobes/etc...>

It's a freaking INDUSTRY awards show. Do people care about or even watch the IEEE Honors Ceremony? ASME? The National Association of Sales Professionals? Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards?

And also - is it just me or is "the golden globes" the most obvious double entendre ever?

You can't look at that list and say the Grammy's are just a popularity content. There are some incredibly popular individuals and bands on that list. Years of hits with radio play out he wazoo. Obviously the winners aren't chosen just by talent or popularity.

I'll sometimes watch just to see where pop music stands right now, sine I never listen to any of it any other time. I'm usually disappointed.

Exactly! That list if full of legends.

Really??? Heard a couple of moving performances last night. Dolly and Miley singing Jolene. Brandy Carlisle with her spectacular singing. It’s like she sings through a crackling ac30. A solidly entertaining Motown tribute. I would have liked to see more awards I guess, but lots of talented folks doing lots of good music. I’m sure some of it lip synced but plenty not.

And by the way, music is about entertainment of folks as much as anything.

Well here's the thing, I started to watch them last night, and just couldn't get into it. One of the interviewers on the Red Carpet was just way over the top! There have been years, where someone made it to the show who was great.

Bruno Mars was incredible the year he won. Raphael Saddik's band backed up Mick Jagger one year. There was that bizzare Sly and the Family Stone tribute. You just have to read the fine print to see what's coming that year. After all e:)ven

Prince did a Superbowl. Drew Carey kina summed it up. The Grammys (et. al.) are shows where mostly white folks give each other trophies for making lots of money. Just his words.

Was there any actual Music on the Grammys? All seemed like hype and show biz to me. And I didn't hardly fabulous entertainers. Guess I'm just a dinosaur. Most of it seemed terrible sounding, and no talent.
