Are the Grammys still relevant?

Any awards show will face conflicting perceptions about whether or not they are relevant, same for the GRAMMYs. But the awards are only the most visible work of the Recording Academy. If you want to know what the RA is really about, check out the work of MusiCares.
Remember the time, they gave the following award "Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental" to Jethro Tull?

Not at all - they are the epitome of the awards show hype that are there solely to pump PR for the selected ones.
Relevant? Not to me, they're not. It's just a bunch of industry insiders patting each other on the back. It's of no interest to me.
I wouldn’t even go that far. About the only thing the Grammys get consistently is getting it wrong. I.e. Two Against Nature winning four grammys and shutting out OK Computer which was a better and more important album then and now, better selling, better engineered, etc. record sales didn’t influence that one, just them getting it horribly wrong because a once important band decided to cash in.
It's a matter of perspective.
I’m ready to bet that most (if not all) that commented on the irrelevancy of the Grammys were never nominated (much less won) a Grammy.
Let’s be honest, anyone here who would win a Grammy would be on that stage, in a tux, thanking everyone from their producer to their grandmother.
Why? It’s exposure.
I’m not watching or following the Grammys. I never have. But if they ever give me one, you can bet I’ll say it’s the greatest honor in my life.
Some will say it’s selling out, some will say it’s business acumen.
In the meantime, I`ll keep playing music because I like to.

I think the Grammys exists for and is geared to ‘Hollywood Elites’ and that’s exactly why it doesn’t appeal to workman musicians like me. It’s the same thing that’s wrong with most Hollywood awards ‘ceremonies’, and yes, they are ceremonies. Hollywood is a very dark world.
The lesson I learned from this year's Grammies: don't bother writing a song; make a video that taps into the zeitgeist and they'll give you an award for Best Song of the Year!
