Jack Bruce, Geezer Butler, Tim Bogert, Greg Ridley, Rick Danko etc? I feel so out of step with recent bass playing trends, I'd love to latch onto a band with a freewheeling, forecful, ferociously creative yet song oriented and teamplaying bassist like this. You know the type I mean, they're all over classic rock. They always keep the relentless groove going, and it's aggressive, sensual and exciting. A guy like Andy Hess is a good example, any more?
Yeah, unfortunately he's dead so I can't really think of him as a new bassist anymore. But that's the kind of bassist I'm talking about for sure.
Geez, does a guy have to start a thread about Tal Wilkenfeld to get some responses around here? I guess nobody else can think of any either.
Sad but true.... Where are the melodic, adventurous players who lock in tight and compliment the band environment WITHOUT being soloists?
I think his name is Caleb Speir, he plays with Macy Gray, saw them on a PBS show, not my kind of music, but I kept it on because I liked the bass so much. He's an exceptional bass player IMO. I watched some Macy Gray stuff on youtube, but it wasn't the same.
I am - and I'm old enough to be legit. Some samples here -if you like this, I can direct you to several others. http://cdbaby.com/cd/bears2
That looks cool, mabe I'll check it out soon. It's funny that the closest to "new" most people can think of are from bands that no longer exist! That goes for me, too... well, except for Andy Hess.
As for Macy Gray, she has a good bassist but that's more in the Nathan East vein of bass playing than what I'm really talking about.
Jacques Lu Cont of Les Rythmes Digitales and Zoot Women is a great bass player whenever he plays the damn thing! Saw him on channel 4 one night doing some great disco slap bass. His music sounds like sampled DJ stuff on the recordings but he plays all the instruments ...check out his bassline to 'music makes you lose control'. He played a DJ gig for mates of mine in a club they run in Dublin a while back, apparently his real name is Stuart and he's from Reading!
Check out a metal band from Sweden called Witchcraft. http://www.witchcrafthome.com/ http://www.myspace.com/witchcraftswe
Cool, but not really what I'm looking for. When did the guys I mentioned play disco slap bass? Guy who mentioned Witchcraft is right on the money. I haven't even thought about those guys for about a year, thanks for the reminder! Great Geezer/John Symon Asher Bruce influenced heavy grooving.
More for fans of Steve, Cliff and Claypool than Bruce, Bogert and Butler. I guess I'll have to make do with my old Cream, Fudge and Sabbath records as well as just Gov't Mule and Witchcraft for newer stuff. There are worse fates than that.
