OK, I've always been biased against Opeth for whatever reason (not sure if I've ever even heard a song of theirs) and occasionally wondered if I've been missing something. Not a big fan of really heavy stuff (that's my preconception of Opeth), except in the old, old school sense though willing to see if that's what I'm looking for.

Opeth is indeed a very accessible band compared to almost every other band in the death metal genre. I'm not even sure why anyone calls Opeth death metal except for the fact that Mikael Akerfeldt growls half the vocals. I've always thought they're more like Gothenburg's answer to Queensryche or Fates Warning. That's just my opinion though, of course.

Check out Bas Remans, the bass player in Millionaire. They're a Belgian rock band that's fantastically versatile, heavy, spacey & everywhere in between. The 1st track on their 1st album, "Outside the Simian Flock" starts off with a simple slow soloed bass riff in 5 & then builds for about 4 minutes. It sounds like an old P bass driving a couple of 15s really hard, but totally controlled. Pretty cool for a more recent band. You'll dig it!
That is the guy I mentioned in the first post! Other guys mentioned, I'm familiar with them but they don't really fit the bill- I don't see Nate Mendel as that kind of bass player!
But I have got a couple of names to check out, so thanks.
Jeff Caxide from ISIS is worth checking out.

Firstly, it's "their", but whatever.
However, the different bassists all have different styles and leave their own, unique imprint on the songs.

That's really good from the bass player's side, I might have trouble getting used to the vocals though, but that's just me.
He is very good, and even the style of bassist that most appeals to me. The band's music is just so not for me, though. Kind of neat, but probably too angsty rather than fun.
There have been some good suggestions in this thread, and I've liked some of the players but not the context they're playing in (I do like QOTSA and have for a long time). I know I'm probably hard to please, but I have to like the music not just the bassist. That's only my responsibility, and at least this thread has reminded me there is hope.
Maybe it's up to me to make the music I hunger for.
I would put flea into the category of what you are looking for. Solid bass playing that holds the band together.

I like the vocals in both Kyuss and QotSA, actually. I've worn myself out on both those acts, particularly Kyuss though. It's that Loverless band whose vocals I didn't love, not QotSA.

There are a lot of great suggestions in this board, some I've forgotten about or taken for granted. It's not that I don't like what others are doing, but none of them is exactly what I'm looking for. Only I can make the EXACT music I want to hear.
