Identifying intervals is something that rarely comes up in conversation and is of minor use in real life music

Well, I've been a musician for over 50 years and taught it for 36. Currently I'm performing over 120 times a year and people will speak of chords, but I've not been in a situation that I can recall where someone said, "Hey, can you sing a minor third above that note?" or, "Just what is that interval?" etc. Many times I've been played a line and asked to play in a piece of music, but actually saying what the intervals are is not a part of that conversation.
