I would not be allowed to marry a prince. I'm pretty sure that my 17 lb basses feel heavier than my 9 lb basses but other than that it is all a blur. Sometimes I wish I had default EQ settings, but I tend to muddle with them every time I'm in a new environment anyway so I wouldn't even know what default is 100%

I didn't worry about the string spacing, but I'm very picky about the string action... I'm always checking the action on my basses, and making adjustments!!!

For me, its action. I like it as low as possible. Once the humidity starts to change I make adjustments to make sure I can get the action the way I like it.

No Im not... But I have to make sure that my action on my bass should be 1.83mm on my treble side, 2.17mm on the bass side, 2.55mm on my B string, or else i loose 5bpm on the metronome on my scale runs on C7 normal position on the neck.

My dirty dozen Deal breakers:

1) String spacing greater than 17mm is a nightmare. I can't play an ER bass with wider spacing. I gave up on a Bongo 6 for this reason
2) If the neck is too round, I can't play it (the Warwick basses I've played always feel like the neck is too round, and my hand starts cramping as I zip along)
3) If the neck is too wide, I can't play it - the other reason I gave up on a Bongo 6
4) 6 string only (it took me 3 years to unlearn that the bottom string is "B", "not "E")
5) I have to carry my bass high I can't play it if its at my waist or lower - my straps are all the EXACT length
6) It has to be a double cutaway body, the hump that many newer basses have looks like a goiter or some kind of unchecked benign tumor .. ewwwwww
7) I have to play roundwounds, period
8) I have to have Dunlop straplocks
9) All the gear I buy is matched. All of my amp stuff matches (all Trace Elliot from the same era), all my pedals match (all Markbass except my Korg tuner, which makes me NUTS so I'm getting a Snark), my guitars are both Yamaha RBXJM2's both in purple plum metallic, both with the same strap, straplocks, strings and cases. So I don't care about other amp manufacturers, other guitars, or other pedals. Cuts down on GAS.
10) My guitar cables must match: Green straight to right angle from the amp to the pedal board, all yellow right angle cables there, then a purple straight to right angle cable from the tuner back to my guitar.
11) I have to use Warwick Rock case flight cases for my guitars - nothing else, no gigbags, ever

Also, I have to have Coke Zero to drink at practice - 2 20 ounce bottles.

Yeah. If I get wound up any tighter my head will pop off and fly about the room making rude noises.

I must at all times wear shirts that are not tucked into my pants, so that I may avoid the dreaded buckle rash.

On the day I bought my 4001, I promised myself that I would never allow my buckle to scratch the back of it. That one, and the one I made to my Bride in 1980 are, perhaps, the only two promises I've ever kept that close to my heart. To this day, my Bride swears that if I were ever burned beyond recognition, she would be able to identify me by finding my belt buckle on my LEFT hip...no matter what I'm wearing, no matter where I'm going. It's just the way I dress. OH! The back of my Ric is a sweet and smooth as a baby's bottom...

I was loving every word of this...sounds beautiful to me!...right up until we got to the '2 20 oz. bottles of Coke Zero'! Let me promise you that if I ever drank 40 ounces of coke-anydamthing I would IN FACT fly about the room making LOUD rude noises! LOL

I found out that a slight difference in the width at the nut on a fiver makes a huge difference in feel to me, down in first position.

Yeah, I was surprised--but my Sadowsky Will Lees feel just right, while my RV-5 is just a little wider than I like. It's just 1/8" difference... And I unloaded a beautiful MTD 535 a while ago, because it was even wider. I just never felt comfortable on it.

This thread is hilarious! I wonder if this translates to other instruments too (I can't even imagine some of us behind a drum kit with these compulsions).

What about extra gear besides the bass set up? I always have a primary set of percussionist ear plugs in my pocket, then a secondary backup set of percussionist ear plugs in my case, then another backup-backup set of foam plugs *just in case*... with reason though, my drummer is Conan...

I also had my guitarists girlfriend say to me once "you're one of those guys where every single thing has it's own little place, aren't you"... it was definitely a jab at me but I took it as a compliment... I'm not the one borrowing straps from the engineer at the studio hahaha!

I think I'm overly concerned about how my stuff looks. I always have a rag around and am constantly wiping my basses down after I touch them. I even got rid of 2 good cabs because they had that fuzzy covering that sucks up every cat hair within 3 blocks. I could never keep them clean.

I hate that cheap fuzzy outdoor carpet stuff that some manufactures use to finish off a cab. I prefer black Tolex finishes like you find on a Fender cab.

I hate when there's too much spare string on the tuning head. There should be enough for one layer of string winding. In addition the string Should pass from the bottom of the winding to the nut. Just has to be that way!

You know what I am talking about. Do certain things drive you nuts that the average person would overlook? You notice a .5mm difference in string spacing? a .25lb difference in bass weight? or maybe you're the type of player who can tell somebody has touched their rig because everything has an exact spot? Maybe you're the type of guy who has to adjust his action once a week to make sure its perfect?

What needs to be "just right" for you?
