Are you a hack bassist?

Full disclosure:

The three guys with whom I'm currently in a band are three of the four guys from my band ten years ago. The drummer, and both guitarists (I was the vocalist). When we decided to reform a few weeks ago, we remembered what a dick AND hack the original bassist was. With bassists being in relatively short supply, it was decided that I, the hackiest of all hacks in the land, would take over bass duties as well as vocals.

As the last guitarist I played with told me, "bassists are just bad guitarists". So yes. Apparently I'm a hack guitarist AND bassist.

Hey now!!! I totally disagree...

I...for one... Never actually tried to play a guitar seriously... Pretty much always been a bassist... Si he is wrong....:hyper::bassist::D

Me and 1stnamebassist were having some giggles behind the scenes about how seriously some people take their bass playing.

Proud to say, I'm a Hack, that's capitalized for me. Actually play guitar but fill in on occasion and still get calls somewhat regularly so I'm happy to be expanding my skills.

Now if I can just shrink the equipment that that I need to carry.

I'm not a hack bassist, but I'm certainly a hack guitarist yet I play in the studio A LOT for $. Just don't ask me to do anything . . . . uh, fancy. Goes for drums too. If it has strings, or you can hit it with a stick, I'll take a crack at it with no shame!!!!

With 10 guitarists for every bass player, it doesn't take too much skill to get into an OK band... Me, I play inside my comfort zone, which thankfully has expanded slowly over the years. The result is that when I've played in band with low to middling talent I was made to feel very good about my playing. On the few occasions where I was part of a very talented band, compliments were few and I felt a bit out of my league. I guess for a semi-pro/ hobbyist I'm probably a B- bassist.
