I may be one of the 2 Americans that knows what a "chav" is, that might make me a nerd.

Don't be suckered in by "skew-whiff" interpretations of Chav though, my radgeness goes as far as wearing trackies and football tops. No burberry for me, but I do enjoy modden cars

I am not so much a nerd as just intelligent. So yes I say nerdy things and my reasoning for a lot of things is nerdy, but I fit no part of the "nerd" physical persona.

No offense implied, but I've always heard the term "chav" to be used in a derogatory manner. Is it not? I've just seen a fight break out over "who's a chav." So I guess I just assumed it was a no-no.

Well, some would say it is an insult, whereas those who truely are "chav" embrace the culture. Of course, I am not "tr00", the "tr00" Chavs really are rough people. So it's kind of an insult, especially when you see people taking it too far (burberry print cars?).

However, in my appearence (stripes shaved into left brown, sporting wear as casual clothing, short hair) people say "Oh you radge" or whatever but don't mean anything bad by it.

Then again, I suppose if you asked 10 different people what "chav" was they'd give 10 different answers. It's a bit of an insult, but it doesn't offend me if people say I am, because in reality, thats just the way I dress. I don't know any other "chavs" who go home and listen to Level 42 and Jonas Hellborg/John Mclaughlin!

I'm a metalhead. that's more of a badge of honour than a disguise...

besides, I wear chainmaille, carry a laptop to high school, and my top upper garment random changes between a dress shirt, a hoodie, a jean jacket, or a t-shirt. Everyone thinks that I'm "too smart". My laptop has it's display settings at #00ff00 text on a #000000 background (it's easier to read that way).

I occasionally listen to Rhapsody of Fire... that's the worst one.

My theory is that Nerd/Geek isn't about *what you like* but *how you like it*.

Do you find yourselves believing that your knowledge/expertise in some area in some way makes you cool, even when no one around you cares? I've known non-nerds who love Star Wars - the nerdness only kicks in when you think being able to recite alien dialog *makes* you cool. I've also known beer nerds (several of my fraternity brothers), cigar nerds (my brother's best friend, those same fraternity brothers), sports-car nerds (my brother-in-law, one of those same fraternity brothers - I'm starting to think I joined a nerd fraternity)...heck, even sports nerds (fantasy football, anyone? although most of my fantasy football nerd friends are the guys I used to play roleplaying games with).

So in my opinion is that there isn't a person on this forum who isn't a bass nerd. Digging prog rock doesn't help the case.

i yesterday answered myself how capacitors work without knowing anything about it... i learnt english by myself at the age of 12, read a lot of technical stuff because i want to know how stuff works or happens (just need to rread once to learn...) but I happen to get average grades... am i a nerd or a smart guy with curiosity(sp?)?

Indeed, However do these cars in question have Vauxhall badges on them or more perhaps more importantly Corsa badges, or even worse are they meant to have the badges on but they have been in fact removed in order to create a ''custom'' ''mental'' look! And whilst driving they feel the need to share with all of us their latest rendition of ''hardcore-clubland mix 47'' whilst trying to swoop on 15 year old girls...

The disguise comes and goes... I look the part right now as I had to look respectable the other day, but I don't always. Straight A's in highschool... pretty good GPA on the old BSc andcoming back for mosre university next year. Aside from the biology in the degree, physics is really interesting, and I'm trying to learn enough about electronics to build simple effects for something to do... Always learning. Definately a nerd. Curious though, how is this differentiated from a geek?
