For clarification, do you have a bass that you use for basically every gig, or not? Personally, I do, I only have 1 bass, but I play Punk, so...go figure, right? If you don't (or do), why?

Definitely not a one bass guy. Mostly because I enjoy variety and have the means to enjoy some variety. For me, that means somewhere between 6-8 basses that are all unique.
For 90% of my time practicing/rehearsing/recording/performing, my 1992 Ibanez SR885 was my only bass.

No, I'm not committed to one bass. I'll use several in the course of time depending on the type of gig I'm doing.
Sometimes I need a 5 and sometimes I can get away with a 4 and sometimes need a fretless.
Sometimes I'll pick one for a particular sound like say the StingRay if we're doing bigger rooms and my Surine 5 if it's a small intimate setting because it sounds more full at lower volumes.

I have one bass--a StingRay 5HH.
With a little EQ adjustment, a move of the pickup selector, and placement of my right hand, I can get close enough to a P and J tone to fit most needs.

I have multiples of the same bass, but I generally only use one of them for gigs. I always have a different one as backup though.
In my case if mainly depend on the genres of music I like .. there are basses which are more suitable for playing certain genres, other basses which can best be used for other purposes .. having more than model of bass (model, not more than one bass) may become a necessity in this regard
I was loyal to one exceptional bass for 25 years. Now I again have one bass I love playing, so I stick to that. I never had the money or inclination to own multiple basses. You can only play one at a time.
I've got a P and a fretless J, but my son has 4 and 5 string Ibanezes so we play whatever takes our fancy at the time. He's a *much* better player than me though!

I have a P, a J, and a Ric. I tried playing all three at the same time, and I ended up in the hospital!
I have The One, but then just one more for songs I'm learning in alternate tunings, because I'm too lazy to retune my instrument every day.
Ironically the alt-tuning bass is lower-mass & higher-output than my #1.
