Are you a string hoarder?

I install Labella flats, play them as long as I own the bass. My oldest set was installed around 1972.

I keep one spare set of strings around, but since 1967 when I started playing electric bass, I have never broken a string.

Now that I think of it, I have some spare sets of Hartke roundwound strings that I got with a special purchase. I need to sell them, as I'll never use them.

I have a box sitting nearby that weighs around 25lbs, and its full of used bass strings. I might fall into that hoarder category; I just never use strings to their full demise so they are worth keeping around for a tone. And I've got almost every brand and type represented in there as well.. even some oldschool prisims and trace elliots.

I've been in a perpetual trial phase with various brands of strings the past year or two so I do keep all the sets I've removed in separate ziplock bags which are marked with the gauge, brand, make and what bass they were cut for. So yeah, I have a big bin full. Once I settle on what strings I will use for a while, I will probably sell some of them for cheap to people who can use them on similar basses.

When I was way more broke than I am now, I used to save every set of strings after I got new ones.
Part of the idea was that if I broke a string I coudl restring it with one that was already broken in. This does work in theory. But in practice I almost never break strings. So I had about 5lbs of extra strings in my case.
I eventually decided to only keep the most recent set in my case and toss the rest.

I have also gone into hoarding mode as well. Mostly because I end up buying half a dozen sets whenever I find a deal on a set that I like. And I like to string all my basses a little bit different (what is the point of owning a dozen basses that are all set up the same?!

I'm not. When I change strings the old get snipped off and to the garbage they go. Only backup strings are new ones in package. Now if you want to talk about hoarding I do that with jagermeister.

I don't hoard, but I usually keep a few sets around. I've only got one new set left and I'm waiting on these new balanced tension XL's before committing to buying more. But sure, I keep some sets around.

Don't strings that ancient lose all there elasticty resulting in a dead thump with no sustain?

I know you like flats, but don't they need replacing from time to time?

They don't lose elasticity since they're metal and metal has none to begin with But it does result in a dead thump with no sustain. Lots of people like that, though.

Well I guess all matter has elasticity to some degree, doesn't it? But I'll tell you this...Silly Putty is a lot more elastic than metal.
