Aren't there any new pre amps?

Hy there. I'we been searching the web looking for a preamp, and the only thying I'we found are simulator stuff from Line6 and Behringer. Even tho I love the Behringer stuff (witch has never let me down btw) I would rather have a simple one channel preamp, since I don't like my sound that complex. I have a rack Fx unit I would like to run in the loop and a compressor to.

Any ideas where I could find one?

I have a Sansamp RPM preamp and I love it. The sweepable mids make it worth the price.

Do a search. There are zillions of posts about the RBI.

I've owned several Sansamp products (BDDI, PBDDI, RBI, RPM, VT, PSA-1) and my absolute favorite for bass was the RPM.

Really? I tested the RPM and RBI and chose the RPM because I thought that was a darker sounding unit.

My milage varies so it seems.
Obviously we might have different tonal goals and/or definition of dark.

I can understand what you mean by lacking versatility.

I don't need versatility (considering the RPM in this case). I don't mind a one-trick-pony if it's the only trick I want.

Here you can have a gander in case your local music stores don't have much to offer you.


You don't need an effects loop. In most cases you can go:
preamp -> rack effects -> poweramp
But alwas check signal of your particular equipment before setting up.

Thanks alot people. After doing some research on the sansamp I found a local store who is the Dealer here in Iceland. Looks like i'll be going for the RPM or RBI. Whats the diffrence between those two?

The VTRM is the new Tech21 preamp.
It is a rack version of their VT Bass pedal, plus a bit more.
I own the RPM and VTRM, not the RBI.

I vote for the Meatsmoke tube Preamp the thing is incredible with separate controls for the boost channel I love this thing.

RPM has sweepable mids and a little more gain (IIRC). Between those two I'd go for the RPM...

Biggest bang for the buck I found was the PreSonus Eureka. Avalon quality, Tech 21 budget. Really first class!

I have been using one of these Rolls units as a preamp. It delivers sufficient voltage to my Berg IP112ER/HT112ER stack. Nice sound with my Baby bass.
I paid $ 30.00 for the pair.

Thanks for the shout out, but at the moment I am strictly a DIY builder and have no real desire to ever build the same thing twice...

If I were buying something of new production, the JGR, Jules Monique, and RMI Basswitch would be the most likely prospects.

You can a pedal pre too (Aguilar Tonehammer, Darkglass are some current ones). What's wrong with the old preamps. I like the SVT IIp.

New Pre amp? well this is a Pre amp designed by my son Robin, although an AP studio design we tested it on my basses and it sounds very good indeed, it has an all passive EQ which is basically a collision of a Pultec EQP 1a and an Meq.
It offers hand wound inductors and an all pentode tube pre amp or Fet pre amp so is unfortunately a bit impossible to produce at a saleable price for bass guitar
