Army to shoot live pigs for training

New.com.au said:
THE US Army plans to shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise for soldiers headed to Iraq.

The army says it's critical to saving the lives of wounded soldiers; animal rights activists call it cruel and as outdated as Civil War rifles.

Maj Derrick Cheng, from the 25th Infantry Division, said that the training, on anaesthetised pigs, was being conducted under licence and the careful supervision of veterinarians.

"It's to teach army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours," he said.

interesting...it's certainly a way to practice treating gunshot wounds on live subjects and anesthesia would ensure a lack of suffering.

I don't think I care enough to form a real opinion though, as long as they eat the things afterwards that is. I wouldn't want to see a nice bit of pork go to waste, even if it is full of holes.

Also I don't much like PETA.
