Ask a drummer

I just bought a set of Yamaha drums sans cymbals.

What cymbal set would you recommend for hi-hats, ride and crash?

Thanks

If you have to choose between expensive drums and expensive cymbals... choose cymbals. You can tune crappy drums to sound good... the same is not true for cymabls.

I'd say some zildjian 14inch mastersound hi-hats or some paiste Signature dark crisp hats will do you fine.

sabian 21 inch raw dry bell ride or paiste 21 inch dry heavy ride

And any Zildjian k or k custom crash 17 inch will do you right.

If you are on a buget try the zildjian zht series or the sabian b8 series.

Never ever buy a cymbal that you can't try first.

Good Luck. LD

Paiste? Good call, but they are kinda pricey (at least here).

You could always go with a cymbal pack...the Sabian AAX is a good cymbal pack. Heck, for the price, the B8s aren't terrible, if that's all you can afford.

But for the love of God, and I can't stress this enough, avoid the Zildjian Titanium (whatever they are called). They are silver, and evil.

I've always distrusted packs for two reasons.

1. you can't play that exact cymbal before hand

2. I like my cymabals to have contrast. too many cymbals from the same series and feel like im saying the same thing over and over again when I play.

Yeah the Paistes have always been more pricey than the others. Probably has to do with the economy and tax structure of where they are made.

You are right about the Zildjian Titaniums with the execption of the flash splash. That thing sounds a-pretty-pretty-gooooood!!!...

While you do have a point with not being able to try the exact cymbal beforehand, and how the cymbals are very much alike, I'm alright with that. I kinda like how the cymbals in a package blend together so well...

Oddly enough, as much as a fan of cymbals packs as I am, I personally went the same route as you suggested...weird.

And yeah, I'm not a big splash guy, so I'll take your word on that, I just know the Titanium ride haunts me at night. Disgusting.

steve smith, bernard purdie, and jojo mayer.

That's cool!

Bernard Purdie makes my list with Steve Ferrone and Billy Cobham.

Next question,

How would you recommend that I get started drumming? I have the kit, getting cymbals this weekend.

I know there are lots of ways to start, what would you suggest?

Any DVD's or books you can recommend?

I'm in it for the long haul and I know what that means.

I've played piano for over 30 years, so I'm serious about learing to play drums.

Have you heard Jo Jo Mayer on the Screaming Headless Torsos' debut album?
If so...care to take a stab on what's happening rhythmically on the 2nd tune, "Free Man"?
;)

...and thanks for your answer to my question a couple pages ago (or so).
