The best course of action for a fella in this predicament is to run to the hills.

Absolutely. When I proposed to my wife 2.5 yrs ago I asked her father. Not so much as to get his permission but to have his blessing and encouragement. It's not about asking for some property it's about respect.

No.Here's a hypothetical question for you: You have met a woman you are MADLY in love with, there is no doubt at all that she is "the one", you know you want to spend the rest of Your life with her, and you know for a fact that she feels exactly the same way about you.
So you go ask her father for permission/blessings/whatever to marry her. Daddy says "no". Would you then not ask her to marry you out of respect for him? Honestly?
Absolutely.
And chances are if you're not a total $#!t head dad isn't going to have a problem with you.

Yes, but her Dad also knows when you have trouble with her HE will be asked to help with the repairs.Because marrying the woman you love is like buying a car. From her dad.
On rare occasion I agree with you in principle. This is one of those times.Listen, I get it, you guys are such A-holes you know they're going to say no so you look to circumvent the situation by making excuses or trying to claim you're some kind of champion for women's rights (ie they aren't property)
you're marrying into this family, suck it up nancy boy.
A marriage involves two people. No hanger-ons necessary. It is disrespectful to the woman because it evolved directly from when they were treated like property.because disrespectful people are disrespectful in all aspects of life, aka not worth my time.
My ex wife's father absolutely hated me, he told me no, I discussed it with him, discussed it with her, and he changed his mind.
My wife's father has Behcets Syndrome which caused him to have a stroke he has the mentality of a 5 year old. I asked him anyway OUT OF RESPECT, then I asked her mother. she said yes.
guess your hypothetical isn't so hypothetical.

Funny, this is the most disrespectful thing in this thread. My ex wife's father absolutely hated me, he told me no, I discussed it with him, discussed it with her, and he changed his mind.

The first part of this post does in no way answer my question, but by all means, please keep telling Your self it does.
The second part is just plain rude and... Wait, what's the word I'm looking for..? Oh Yeah, that's right; "disrespectful". Remember to never do business with yourself.
And as I have stated earlier, in my country there is no tradition for asking the father/parent for their "daughters hand" in marriage. Does that mean we're all disrespectful excuse making a-holes?
Funny, this is the most disrespectful thing in this thread.![]()
Yes, deluded hypocrisy is a pet peeve of mine.sounds to me like I hit a little too close to home.
In this more enlightened time we just consider the overall investment of time, money and love we have put in. Seems a real waste to fritter all that away along with possibilities of perpetuating our DNA in an unpleasant combination with @zzhole DNA.A marriage involves two people. No hanger-ons necessary. It is disrespectful to the woman because it evolved directly from when they were treated like property.
So what if daddy is a raging psycho alcoholic who routinely beats his wife and kids? I think we're forgetting that in many cases the father isn't worthy of respect to begin with.

you asked what i would do, i told you exactly what i did. how in the world does that not answer your question? you're just being ornery for the sake of being ornery.
You are the one who came in here guns blazing calling everyone who disagrees with your ancient patriarchal worldview ********. "Respect" L.M.F.A.O.indefensible position, switch gears to being inflammatory.
