Double Bass Associate vs Assistant Principal?

Both are lesser mortals than Principals. Maybe Associate Principals are not quite of equal standing (when they would be called Co-Principals) and get to lead the section in all the lesser programs left after the Principal selects the most prestigious ones! Maybe Assistant Principals permanently sit on the front desk and turn pages for the Principals. Sometimes they are called Sub-Principals. They get some extra pay loading for the extra pressure but none of the glory because they will rarely if ever lead the section. Much depends on the size of the orchestra.

That's how it worked in my orchestra!

I was quite happy to be a Tutti player, without all that extra pressure.

In the Cleveland Orchestra Scott Haigh is the associate principal and sits first chair if the principal is unavailable. I don't think that Kevin Switalski. who is assistant principal, sits first chair very much, if at all.
