Started as sophomore in college at 18 in ‘66. I’m 74 now, so playing for 56 years. Still gigging 1-3 nites a week: jazz, funk, blues, rock, whatever… It’s been a long run for sure.

Got my first bass for my fourteenth birthday way back in 1991. Had never touched one before, haven't put it down since. It was my first instrument - didn't pick-up guitar until later and at that, I can chord but that's about it.

Not really . I started at 19 and played till 22, then quit for 7 years for different reasons and now restarted at 30 . Still in the first laps though

First try at 15. (On a 1976 4001, no less. I didn't know what I had.) Didn't get anywhere. Sold it to buy my first computer. Now, 30+ years later, I have a career in that field, and it was time for a new hobby. This time, I'm getting somewhere (learning Jazz, surprisingly).

Started taking lessons about a week later, from Mr.Craig at Craigs music, quite literally a mom and pop store.
Started my first band about a month later.
Good times.

Guitar since 20.

At 50 I picked up a friends bass (for the first time in my life) during a bbq jam with friends. Instantly fell in love with the instrument and realized the mistake I had made. Sold all my guitar gear within a month and never looked back.

Age 19 in '70 I took up bass for a girlfriend. Been loving the bass ever since, though the girlfriend is long gone.

Got my first bass when I was 23 (August of 2007).

Wish I could say I kept playing, but at about 28-29, my life and career made it hard to practice regularly (I’d play for a few days every few months, but could never keep it going for much longer than a week).

I finally changed my job to something a lot more manageable, and have been playing everyday for the last month or so. I’ve been making pretty decent progress so far, and am much wiser with my time then in those first few years where I only learned songs from tabs (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I wasn’t growing in the areas I needed to).

I learned to read music and play clarinet, piano, and saxophone at an early age, but quit to do theater in high school, when I also started messing around with electric guitars, but not seriously.

I started bass at 44, was not at all serious for five years, started kinda practicing around age 50, then dove in 100% at age 51 during initial COVID lockdown. I've been all-in since.
