ATK 305

Keep an eye out for ones made in the 90's. I recently bought a 305 on ebay for $300 plus $40 shipping. Good, solid bolt-on with nice ergonomics and killer tones. YMMV.

Id personally look second hand aswell, as they often go really cheaply, and ive heard a few bad things about the newer ones not being a very good quality.
Id also suggest looking at the 405 model, added J neck pickup and 24 frets, the extra pickup options are really useful

I had a 405, and it only had the triplet bridge pickup.
That wasnt a 405 then, as the ATK 400 series all had the additional J pickup.

Well I did it I pulled the trigger on a ATK305 TriFade. It will be in about a month, they had to order it straight from Ibanez because nobody has them in stock yet. I would like to see pics of anybodys ATKs.
More than worth the money, I'd say. The quality on my new 305 is superb - an extremely nice piece of ash, super-slick neck, and good quality hardware. It's all put together well - I've heard some bad reports on the new ones, so maybe I've been lucky, but I can't see them varying that much, and mine's up to the "up with the best" standard. The tone is to die for -with a bit of playing with the eq you can get a P, a J and a MM sound - plenty of bark. The only thing I don't like about the 5 is the string spacing - 16.5 mm I believe, and that's taking me a lot of getting used to after the usual 19 mm.

Wow... that sucks. They looked wider to me... that's a real shame to hear.
Its a fairly common thing with some series of Ibanez basses, the neck dimensions of the 4 and 5 string are often near identical
I'm afraid so - I even checked with a ruler. It feels really tight, and I'm having a lot of trouble getting used to it. The sound almost makes up for it though - when I pick up anything with a 19mm spacing now I can't play that properly either! That's my excuse anyway. Seriously, don't let it put you off - I think it's worth the trouble of adapting for the sound. After 34 years though, the muscle memory is pretty-well permanently wired in for 19mm.
I played one of the new ATK305's. What a bass! Pretty much nailed the Stingray tone, felt great, nice construction.
