Atkinson basses... who owns one?

Hi all! I have just ordered one!
It's going to be:
P-style
Light alder body in olympic white
maple/rosewood neck
Dimarzio pu
Hipshot vintage bridge with a string spacing of 0.669

I plan on getting a maple necked P bass , hopefully in shell pink ,mint guard, maple neck and sp-2's. Heres to hoping my christmas mney comes through.

PJ config (duncans, or mabye he will let me use Nordy if I ship them to him)
J neck with inlays
tort pickguard
Oly white or Sonic Blue

In other words, a Lakland Duck Dunn with a J, for about $2500 less

I have been e-mailing with Dan a couple of times now. He is super-helpful. And regarding the PJ-pickups, I´m sure that can be done. I´m having a bass built with a P/P pickup configuration, with two Lindy Fralin p-pickups. Can´t wait for the result...

Very interesting idea, I hope it sounds great. If he will do a P/P I am sure a PJ is right in line. What kind of turn-time is he talking about?

You can start out Jaco style. It's just a Warmoth body so if the controlplate is put in the proper position, it's no big deal to add a 'guard later.

better yet, why not just build it yourself? the parts will only go in one way (i.e., foolproof)...

Almost true, and Warmoth does excellent finishes.

However, there are some aspects of instrument assembly that require slightly more skill than just turning a screwdriver.

i can't think of any, unless the bridge mounting holes haven't been pre-drilled...

Aside from neck/bridge alignment, I was also thinking of tasks such as nut work, fret levelling/crowning/dressing, the electronics work, and a good setup.

i've never had a neck leveled, crowned or dressed. i've cleaned up a few fret edges, thats about it. i have filed my own nuts (ouch!), but only because i wanted to use larger gauge strings than the existing slots would accomodate. plenty of necks are availble with nut installed and ready for use. fretwork done as well, for that matter.

soldering may not be necessary either. pick up a pre-wired harness on ebay or where ever and twist/tape the leads off the pups to the harness. i've twisted/taped on more than one occasion for builds where i was fairly certain i was going to break it down again soon (testing different pups, for example). not optimal or most desirable, but still works.

setup requires basic handtools and only a reasonable IQ.

there are plenty of FREE instructions on the web for ALL of this stuff, unless you just WANT to pay someone else to do it for you, then i understand and thats fine...

Warmoth does do nice finishes, but this one is nitro, not poly. Dan is just doing the paint on the body for me, because he does great vintage nitro finishes that I don't think I could get from the rattle cans myself. I am doing all the assembly myself, so the body will ship to me without a guard installed. I was just looking for an opinion.

I'm not a Jaco-ite, so no guard is not any kind of tribute by me to him (great player, just not my thing). My only reasoning for not using a guard would be allowing that classic finish to show. The bad side would be everybody thinking "this dude must think he's Jaco"
