Atkinson basses... who owns one?

I know, it was just a general statement about Warmoth's finishes in response to the previous "do it yourself" post.
Any particular reason you felt the need to hijack this thread? If you want to do it all yourself,then go for it.
not hijacking anything, i made the simple, single statement that it might actually be more fun/rewarding for one to build a parts bass for him or herself. nothing more. another member took it upon him/herself to dispute the notion. i build them regularly, its not rocket science. apparently dan has some reputation for his finishing skills. if that is the case, then i salute him. my one attempt at finishing a raw body was mediocre at best. the tung oil neck i did, however, turned out immaculate (much easier)...
No, it isn't rocket science, but neither is it as simplistic as you make it out to be.
Read the original post. He wasn't asking if it would be more rewarding to do it yourself. Your respomse is basically,"hey,don't let this guy build you a bass,when you can do it yourself". I think you post here is very rude and disrespectful of Mr. Atkinsons work. There are folks here that really can't invest the time to putting together a bass. So we pay someone to do it for us. I guess you've never bought a completed intrument,and only assembled your own? Stick to the original topic please.
my initial comment was a few pages into the thread and was responding to a recent post, not that of the OP. if you care to read a few posts back from here, i did actually praise dan for his apparent skills at painting/finishing. if you further object to my opinions, then do so as an american who still enjoys, albeit limited, freedom of expression.
i buy some and i build some (from parts, not from blocks of wood). i encourage others to try their own projects and have already admitted to my limitations. i also stated that if someone wants to pay another to assemble an instrument for them, i support that. what is it that annoys you?

Too bad. To me, it is money well spent to let a pro assemble and set up your instrument. If the quality and performance matter that is. That is why people like Atkinson do well, and have a useful service to offer. I have had too many bad DYI experiences to try again!
I just emailed Dan about a bass. Itll be some time before I have the cash, but I am good at saving up for things. I need a good bass to go with my main MIA P.

I just bought a body from Dan. I typically spray and finish my own stuff, but quite honestly, the price he was asking for the body made it worth it to me. His prices are "beyond" reasonable... it was easier to buy the body from him and save "my time" for other things.
I haven't received the body yet - I just bought it. I can say that his communication has been great, and thus far he has been a pleasure to deal with.

5. j neck
Along with their being no problem doing a p with a J neck, Dan emailed me back with a response in about an hour. Couldn't be more impressed with the level of service at least so far at the beginning of the process.
Do any of you experienced Atkinson owners have any feedback on which P pickup sounds best in this bass? I like a "hot" p sound like what you get with a duncan quarterpounder. Any other suggestions?

I have the exact bass you describe above made by Dan in Lake Placid Blue - ash/maple. The Seymour Duncan pickup is best described as a rock option in my opinion. Some of the more vintage style pickups sound thumpy and round - with the standard pBass growl in it. The SD pickup is more cutting and seems to angle toward upper mids and more bite (whereas vintage seem to go towards lower mids for thump and boom). It sounds like a good 70s Pbass and thats exactly what I wanted out of the build.
I'm very happy with my Atkinson. I used it last night in a rehearsal and the guys in my band were extremely impressed.
