Attack Goat::Depth Charge?

Fuzz? Gosh you'd think with all of the fuzz questions and discussions around here that these would have been compared somewhere along the lines.

I did check out grygrx's site and found that he had the Wounded Paw AG review. And in the past he had spent some time with the Depth Charge but no real info on it.

They seem to be very similar in setup...tone, drive (gain), blend and level (vol.). And the form factor is the same with the inputs at the top as well as the same size box.

Has anyone spent any quality time with both of these boxes to make a comparison?

It's definitely not a clone (meaning the same schematic was used) but it might be based on it.

It's not a Brassmaster clone. I did look at that circuit among many others when I was developing it but didn't use anything from it.

I'm curious as well. Mostly because I've never tried an Attack Goat.

As for the Depth Charge, it was too "buzzy" for me. More so than the Malekko (which was still a bit too buzzy for me) which makes me wonder which of the two the original Brassmaster sounds more like.

Well. Keep in mind that it's "been awhile" with the Depth Charge.

The blend knob wasn't 0-100% blend it was more like 25%--75% which seemed an odd choice. Knowing now that the brassmaster unblended is a little thin without the clean signal it doesn't surprise me, but really... why only down to 25%?

It's high end background noise/fuzz/sizzle is wayyy wayy out there. If you run direct, or using a cab with a horn.. it's TOO MUCH in my opinion. It's funny, because I was running it through my practice rig for awhile (no horn) and was really jamming on it. I took it out one night and the keyboard player threatened to quit right there if used it again (I know some people might like that).

I'm also into the art of pedal design and construction (I know that it isn't always a popular stance, sound first etc...), but the build quality was pretty weak. Esp considering it was the most expensive pedal I had ever purchased (at the time).

It's a fuzz that bites without being too harsh. I'll point to my review if you want more exposure to my opinions there. I am in the process of revisiting that review with a newer edition of the pedal then I had WAY back then

Even though I'm a user and defender of the Depth Charge. I definately agree it depends heavily on individual circumstance.

I have a GK amp with tweeter control and I almost entirely roll it off and the Depth Charge sounds great. If I changed amps? Maybe not.

I guess what I was looking for was that they both sound very similar and that the less expensive option (AG) would be every bit as good tonally and mechanically as the more expensive alternative(DC).

I have two fuzz boxes that I'm happy with. The B:assmaster SI and the Subdecay flying tomato. But I am thinking that the blend control may be something that I would be interested in having. From what grygrx says the blend is better on the Goat?

Hi I've owned a early version of the Prescription Depth Charge. It produces that huge wall of sound but I would say that versatility is not it's strong point. As I remember it adjusting levels was difficult and I always felt it was a bit muddy sounding. I love the Demeter Fuzzulator..a different fuzz circuit(s) but a great versatile pedal and no low end loss what so ever. Works wonderful with bass.

With those two fuzzes. I wouldn't be buying either. You've got spluttery and aggresive and synthy and gated between those two pedals. If the blend is important you would probablly get more versatily out of a cheap blender from Barge Concepts.
