Attention OT: I met Mark Latimour!

This thread came this close =>| |<= to being titled Attention OT: I met Mark Latimour and Bruce Lindfield! But Bruce hurt his back and couldn't make the trip up from Brighton. But I understand there's some debate as to whether his visage can be captured on a camera anyway, so you may have had to just take my word for it anyway, without photographic proof.

It could also easily have been entitled Attention OT: I met Mark Latimour and Bruce Lindfield! And also bassybill (again), until I found out the thing was called off just before I left the house to get on the train!

It can in fact be captured on camera. There was a pic of him right here on TB. He was sitting at a dining room table, presumably caught in heated discussion over jazz, cell phones, or mp3 players.

Whew, that's a relief! Does that image still exist on TB, or has it been usurped by nefarious forces?

The first time that Mark and I met up was in Hammersmith (home of James May, BTW) and we walked for a short distance along the Thames from about Hammersmith Bridge. I'm told the weather, warm and pleasant, was unusually warm and pleasant, which was really quite fortunate because most of the pretty young women out and about that Sunday evening were wearing very short skirts. We stopped for a beer at one pub along the riverfront, then later walked on to another for some dinner. And more to drink.

The second time we met up was Saturday for lunch at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on Fleet Street. I was a little late because through my own inattentiveness I missed a bus over near the Battersea Power Station, which as a Pink Floyd fan I wanted to photograph, so I had to wait about another 12 minutes for another to come by. The photo in the original post was shot after lunch, in front of St Paul's Cathedral. I didn't even notice that Mark was sporting a man purse / pouch / delivery sack / whatever it is. The Cheese is a proper old English pub, with cellars that go a couple floors down from street level. They serve up some righteous stout as well as fish and chips. I don't remember what Mark had. It's not too far from Samuel Johnson's house, so I wonder if the Good Doctor ever quaffed some brews there while (whilst?) compiling his dictionary. Get us two ales if you please, Boswell.

Too many to pick just five, have a selection:

For the interiors

The Princess Louise. Gas lit, beer OK. Go to the gents... seriously, a museum piece in its own right.

The Black Friar - Art Nouveau, with a light topping of Art Nouveau, served on a bed of Art Nouveau, inna Art Nouveau sauce. Weekdays only.

The George - Touristy, but worth a look. The only galleried coaching inn left, owned by the National Trust & Grade 1 listed.

The Mayflower Yes, that Mayflower.

For "Madder than Mad Jack McMad", and some very good beer venture to The Montague Arms situated on the cusp of the Shangri-La that is New Cross Gate.

For Beer:

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] - Owned & operated by St Peter's Brewery of Cambridge - some very odd brews indeed... beware of the London Porter.

The Market Porter Adjacent to Borough Market - Many & varied real ales.

Invalid Link Removed - A one-brewery pub, that being Harveys of West Sussex. Really nice Mild.

One for Soho... The Pillars of Hercules - good selection of decent beer, often from smaller breweries.

For "odd" The Seven Stars

There's loads more, but the above should get you on the road to liver failure.

That is indeed quite local. I'm actually in Honor Oak Park, but no-one's ever heard of that & as the postcode changes from SE23 to SE6 (Catford) about 200 yards from me...

Our "Royal Oak" is perhaps unique in the fact that there are no legends of King Charles II hiding in it. Instead Queen Elizabeth I stopped off there & had a nice picnic on her way back from a trip to the seaside.

EDIT: The name rang a bell, just looked Steve up on Basschat & if I'm ever in a position to afford lessons, I suspect he might be a good choice. Thanks for the heads up!

Coincidentally, Mark is one of Steve's students. Steve and his wife (and their baby) are currently doing a house concert tour in the US through, I believe, the rest of the month. He's been a friend of mine for close to 10 years.

BTW, I discovered yesterday that my handshake with George Martin was caught on camera after all.
