if there were inexpensive, decently made 7's, i'd certainly own a few, and dig em too. i -wish- essex made a 7 string bass, for instance - i would -love- to get a beater 7 that i could hack on and mod out.

John, of course, the saddest part of your "wish" for an Essex 7 string, it would STILL probably cost close to a grand, just because of the neck. I have no doubt Kurt's people could produce a body and pickups and come up with appropriate hardware. But I would have to imagine the neck would cause them no small amount of anguish! Added string tension, proper sizing, frets (if applicable)-all in all-would probably make the neck the most difficult and expensive part of the whole equation for them.
Still, a grand is most likely quite a bit less than you've paid for your other 7's and it could still qualify as a "beater 7"

Well, they make 7, and 8 string guitars, around the 7/800 mark, sometimes cheaper, I can't see why they couldn't do a 7 bass, at about the 6/800 area, depending on options, I'd buy one for sure, I can tell you that(mad gas for a B-F bass recently).

I dunno, I still think a 7 string bass would cost more than a 7 or 8 string guitar, not less. I do think a grand would be a pretty fair price and who knows? Maybe they come in around $900 but I cant imagine much less than that.
But hey, Kurt has done some pretty amazing things with prices, hasnt he?

Yeah, he sure has, thats why I thought it might be cheaper, but honestly, 1000$ US, I'd drop that for one.

As for the 7 and 8 guitars, some of them are pretty flash for the price, a 7 string trem for example, I can't see how he's getting them in his range, amazing.

I badly want one of their 7 string Telecasters, and I don't even play guitar anymore....

AGREE with it being nice when you find the bass for you...That's how I felt when I got my Birdsong...HOWEVER...My Carvins are both really nice too. The B4 was cheap...but I love the way it plays. The XB75PF didn't cost nearly what the Birdsong did,but it also plays nice and sounds GREAT. I bought the Birdsong because I was looking for a short-scale that was a 5-string. I'm TICKLED TO DEATH with it.I agree with most of the above...play them all...enjoy them all...life's too short to worry about what others think.

i keep seeing people talking about playing their ibanez basses and their musicman sterlings or any other stock bass, and i just cant imagine ever going back to a stock bass after owning a custom.

i have a 6 string queen bee and trying to go from that to something on a stand at guitar center is like going from driving a ferrari to a honda accord.

do any of you guys suffer from this? i still have a MIM jazz bass that ive got modded out a little, but i only use that for playing metal which isnt something id use my bee for. but i just couldnt imagine ever buying a stock bass again after playing my custom and playing on numerous other customs.

I love how different levels of basses feel. All but one of my axes are mass produced. The other is kinda is, but not as much as a Yamaha or a Music Man. (Human BaseX oc.5)

Every bass can teach you something. I guess that's why I don't get some of you guys that have more than one of the same make and/or model, string spacing, pick-up config, woods or what have you.

To each his own, thank goodness. I doubt that all of us would be happy with anyone elses bass collection.

A good reason for having two of the same kind of bass is so you have a backup that sounds pretty much like your main bass, or one for different tunings. Maybe you want the same type of tone as your main bass, but also want to string it BEAD or CFBbEb instead of EADG. Maybe one is in pristine condition, and the other is sort of beat up and so it's the one you take to the really sketchy areas of town.

Anyway, I'm not really very big on boutique basses. I've played a couple, didn't like them. Of course, they're almost all active basses, and I've not yet tried an active bass I liked. I like passive 4bangers. Everyone has a different idea of perfection in the bass guitar.

My "perfect bass" I think would be little different than a stock Rickenbacker 4003. The basses I've liked best besides Rickenbackers so far have been my Ibanez 4001 copy, a Schecter Stilleto neckthrough 5 string, an MIM Fender Jazz bass and this one old neck through Yamaha bass from the 80's.

This thread is silly. It's like drummers saying that Vic Firth sticks are better than Pro Mark. The general public cant tell. So; buy a $150 Squire & set it up/ play it out. Buy a $5000 Pedullazonalembicrittersadowskibeejerzydrozdconklinfbass & set it up/ play it out. Whatever works, right? Is it about the music or the tools? Music for me.

One of the ways in which I found the Honda vs. Ferrari analogy apt relates to parts and service. If I needed parts or service for a Honda, I could go into any auto shop and probably get what I need, not so with a Ferrari.

Likewise, if you own a Fender any tech can do just about any repair on it and there are drop-in replacements/upgrades for the tuners, bridge, pickups, electronics, neck, body, pickguard, neck plate, string tree, knobs et cetera available everywhere.

it's tightly spaced and only 30" scale length, from what i hear, more like a baritone guitar than a bass.

that being said, if it were relatively inexpensive i would give it a shot - might be a "guitar" i could really get into .

Its listing at over 2k though, so your still talking 1600/1900 area, I'd say....

IIRC, they also do a 7 string baritone.


Another thing I was thinking of, was a Rondo 8 guitar, in the 28+ scale, and converting it to a 7 shortie bass.

rondo has an 8 string guitar? i'd give that a spin, i'm no stranger to 8's heh.

edit : holy cow, you can select a 30" scale length on the 8 strings, and it ends up being ~$550~ . that's awesome. i might have to hop on that.
