in 30". heh tuned exactly like my 8 string basses, just an octave higher. that's a trip.

All 8-string guitars are tuned F# - e

A lot of 7-string bands are switching over to 8's to cop Meshuggah.


What you should be worried about though is that Low F# is only a few steps away from the E on a standard 4-string Bass.

yeah, those guys really started a trend heh. still, there isn't a guitar around that does low end tone, clean or distorted, as well as a good bass does. the longer strings just sound better.

why would i be worried about that? most of my basses go an octave (or more) lower than standard 4 strings too :hyper:.

Set up is key

this is a fairly snobbish thread...comparing a ferrari to a honda accord is pointless too
end of the day the honda would be the one id take any where... i like boutique basses.. but to me the most i could imagine is a SS2.. but i have simple tastes and a addiction to modding..

i cant justify 3k plus euro (thou well afford near any bass with planning) on anything that doesnt pay the bills..
my race bikes pay bills (just) they stand me 20k... +

alot more + there..

i like my Mij's with nordys..
Cij's with sadowsky gear..

with a good set up (2 of my 4 have) they out play any custom i have played..
justification, and set up.. thats me..

The problem is more of the "hey, we don't need a Bassist now that we have these now" variety.

And that is exactly what Meshuggah said when they fired their Bassists after the Ibanez Custom shop gave them their first 8-strings. Though they have hired a new Bassist since. He plays a 6-string Warwick $$ of some kind tuned F# - G


Another problem with Guitarists using 8-strings is that they are only using the bottom three strings (well at least it is an improvement over the "only use the B and E" mentality of the seven-stringers).

Well it could also go the other way. With extended range basses, you could fire that annoying guitar player who keeps showing up drunk/stoned all the time and can't keep his guitar in tune ;).

That's partly why I've gone to the 6 string, so that I can do more melodic playing on my bass rather than try to hax0r a tune out of my guitar (on which I just sound awful no matter how much I practice it).

I've played a couple 7 strings (both conklins IIRC) and with that you have even more range... more range is always good but even better if you're doing the one-man-band type thing....

I stick with my original post.........cause I guess I'm still a snob(like most everyone). Guess what, I do it for the music too, that's why I've started to dress like Bootsy and pulled the frets out of my old crappy Fender, those things were too one dimensional......btw all of this is tongue in cheek.

I'm WAY into that myself! in fact lately i have played a didly bow through a pair of 810's at a couple of blues gigs! (and i'm not joking!)

ive played and ogled a few high end customs, and while they were BEAUTIFUL to look at, and played very well (most of them).... I actually dont see what the big deal is. Both tonewise and playability i didnt see ANY of them to be worth more than say an extra $500 or so compared to my 'stock' MM or Jazz, or warwick. If youre paying for the extra artfulness of visual beauty, then yeah, it may be worth serious coin, but for usefullness and tone..... im not so inspired.
