Popped one of theses in my lakland 55-01.....I am very impressed, super easy to install, whisper quiet, very natural sounding. I got worried when I saw a lot of people talking about hum ect...none here. I great pre for cheap $ Now I just need some better pickups, mk-5 or something comparable. I tried big splits, not for me to much pull on the strings. What are you Audere users running for pups?

I have an Aguilar in my 55-01 but I'll answer anyway!

I bought Big Splits and Bark Mk5's to try and kept the Barts. Both sound phenomenal, just different. Big Splits are raw, unrestricted, big loud bright Jazz bass tone. Mk5's are fatter, smoother, 'burpier'? Basically the difference between the loudest single coil you've ever heard and a very refined humbucker.

I put a Z-Mode 4 band in my Warwick Streamer with Delano pickups. Awesome stuff, these are great preamps. Way easier to install than my Aguilar was (they are pre-wired) and they come with all the pots you need. Both of them sound great, I'm not going to say one kills the other on sound. But for cost, features, and ease of installation...Audere by a mile.

I got a couple of Audere Classic 4-band preamps in my two Carvin Icon 5s (one fretted, one fretless). The aftermarket pickups in each instrument are SGD wide-aperture Neo soapbar humbuckers - same dimensions as Carvin's stock soapbars, or the Bartolini BC5.

While I don't claim to be an experienced connoisseur of high-end electronic components (yet), I must say this is an exquisite combination. The SGDs are full-range, powerful, and very hi-fi - crisp, clean and clear, but also deep, warm and PHAT!

To my ear, the Audere 4-band brings out the best in the SGDs, enabling them to do their thing while staying out of the way. The four bands of EQ allow you to draw a good, precise bead on those essential midrange frequencies, and the Z-Mode switch is super cool for altering the basic character of your tone. (With the SGDs in parallel mode, the lows boosted, and the preamp in Low-Z mode, just look out! It's kind of like playing a pipe organ through a large folded-horn subwoofer! :eek:)

As with any make of pickup, it depends on the specific model... :hmm:

That said, I have a set of Delanos in one of my instruments - a Carvin SB5000. The pickups are the Delano JMVC 5 FE, with those huge 9.5mm pole pieces:

These pickups are badass - hot and aggressive. Very punchy, bright and powerful. :cool:

At the moment, I'm still using Carvin's stock preamp - which is not bad at all. No complaints here. But as I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I've decided to upgrade to the Audere JZ6D-VB-3B. It's a deluxe version of David's Jazz plate, including a six-position rotary Z-Mode switch that will give six combinations of Z-Mode impedance between the two pickups:

I'm very excited about this latest upgrade, and the capabilities of the Delano/Audere combination. I have every expectation that the JZ6D-VB-3B will optimize performance of the Delano JMVC 5 FE, every bit as much as the Classic 4-band has optimized performance of the SGD humbuckers. :cool:

im in the same boat with michael, using SGD and it sounds awesome .... although my setup is with 3zb

at first a got a bit of a hum and lotsa hiss when the treble cranked up.. i decided to redid my shielding properly and now it is dead quiet !!!... now i can use the treble even at full ! (still very usable for me imo)

however, i only tried the p/u in series.. according one of the guys here in TB i could even get en even earthquakey sound when i hooked it up in paralel and set the audere in loZ

I ran the MK5's in my 5501 with an Audere classic when I had it. The MK5's are just clearer and deeper version of the MK1's. If you are looking for a different sound I would probably so some Nordys. I did not like the big singles with that audere pre, I swapped them for the MK5's and was much happier.

My findings for the classic 4 band + pickup types (as per customer installations)

Work well without a hitch:

SGD (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
EMG (with classic 4 band only, the zmodes on the 3zb don't work well with active EMG's)
EMG HZ's (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
Nordstrand (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
Delano (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
Fender pickups (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
Lollar (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
G&L pickups (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
EB Musicman (with the classic 4, or 3zb)
Duncans (with the classic 4 (for blackouts only), or 3zb (blackout's do not work well))
Dimarzio (with the classic 4, or 3zb)


Only one that I had to go the "extra mile", to eliminate noise:

Bartolini (some of the OEM ibanez pickups as well, by Bartolini)

If they are equipped with Bartolini's, be prepared to go that extra mile in shielding and grounding....just sayin'......:)

I had the Audere Classic with Aero Type 1 J pickups: bad combination IMO. The Aero sounded best passive, through the preamp, something happened and they sounded harsh, I had to cut the treble to get a usable sound.

Regarding the Audere: it also has a fair amount of hiss when I used it, not hum or interference garbage and such, hiss. Hiss that could only be turned down by cutting treble all the way.
Hate to be the dissenting voice here but that was my experience...
