Audere preamp installation question....

Hey guys, i have an Audere JZ3-VB-3B on order that should be here in a couple days. I'm putting it into my SX Jazz bass. I've never done any up-grades using electronics before so forgive my idiocy. On the installation instruction on the audere website, they show this image

on the pickups, which wires are "Hot" and "Com". This has me confused. Thanks!

Which is the hot and which is the ground varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. I've never seen the guts of an SX, but it's pretty common for the hot wire to be white and the ground to be black. Or, if you haven't unsoldered everything yet, check out where the wires go on the old electronics. The wire that's soldered directly to a pot is the ground--the hot wire is probably soldered to one of the little tabs that sticks off the side of the pot.

I thought the Auderes required no soldering to install?

The little green block on the right hand side of the picture above is a screw terminal block. So you are correct - no soldering to install. You can either clip the pickup leads at the existing pots orde-solder them to remove your existing control plate.

Generally the black wire would be considered common - J pickup sets can be revered pahse though. Best bet is to use the black lead from the neck pickup as common, the same for the bridge using the alternate color as 'hot' - If hte bass sounds weak with bth pickups on and string when it's one or the other, flip the wires on the conector for the bridge pickup and try that. I've seen it go both way's ... either way - it's no big deal to install.

That's pretty much it.

Here's a pic

Red Wire = Neck Pup

Blue Wire = Bridge Pup

It looks like there is a main white wire, then a un-insulated group of wires surrounding it

It looks like there are two shielded wires from the pickups. The inner wire is the hot and the outer one (shield) that surrounds the inner one is the ground, or common. Those should go right into the screw block. It's really pretty easy. It's nice that they are shielded. Should keep the overall noise level down.

i forgive you... ;) thanks for the info!

Probably in most cases this is true. I wanted to use the battery box and the heel mounted jack already on my MIM Jazz Deluxe, so it required minimal soldering. Note that Audere had pre-cut and joined the battery wire and included the shrink wrap on the part. They really do their job. Once again + to Audere.
