Audio over Cat cable follow-up (XLR to RJ45/Ethercon Adapters)

So, I've had a chance to use the XLR to Cat cable converters and just wanted to post a follow-up.

Skipping to the conclusion, I have to say I think they're absolutely awesome (even an exciting development) for my applications. Although they've been picking up use and commentary for a few years now, I was unaware of them. From the previous thread, I saw that some, but a seemingly small number of people here on the forum, have been using them. Having tried them out now for some different situations, I think these deserve a lot of attention and would be of great benefit to people who have circumstances similar to mine. Basically, if you're not a sound tech, are reading the live sound forum, looking to streamline setups, looking for time savings, you should consider these.

There are several good youtube video going over them



Again, this is the most basic use of cat cable for audio; i.e., simply as a 1:4 physical replacement for XLR cables, and in that, functionally, it's not offering anything that hasn't been available for ages in fantail snake cables and sub snake/drop boxes. They are however, generally smaller, lighter and less expensive that tradition snake options. The criticism that each unit is limited to 4 channels is fair and is what it is. Intuitive (gut level) skepticism of various aspects like fragility and susceptibility to noise/interference is somewhat understandable but unfounded. If you already have an investment in snake cables and sub snakes, then you'd have little interest. If, on the other hand, the whole of your cabling involves running a number of 20'-35' XLRs, they offer an improvement.

My circumstances (which don't think are uncommon) are that I have a small range of recurring scenarios where some amount of cable runs for setup are on us as non-sound tech band members. The way things have gone for me, sub snakes and snake cables have been parts of sound guy or venue kit or maybe a band member who goes deeper into the system (virtually becoming a sound guy), not something that "the band" or individual members have been equipped with. So far, I've geared up with a pair of the fantail boxes, a 26' flat cat6 cable (added Neutrik ethercon carriers), a 20' ethercon cable, and a few sets of gender changers.

3 scenarios so far...

1) One usual full-band scenario is where we are using our IEM rig with house/hired sound and are responsible only for wired IEM runs (In may experience, in there cases, techs don''t consider it helpful for band members to do any cable runs, I presume because it messes with their process and directly knowing how everything is connected).

This past Friday was a small-stage full-band gig with house sound, and the dummer and I are on wired IEMs. On the stage, I put the male box near my pedal board, plugged two fantail ends directly into my headphone amp, and plugged a 10' XLR cable into a fantail end and handed that to the drummer. I plugged in the tail ends for the other box at the mixer and then ran the flat cable between the boxes. Technically, this was instead of running 3 25' XLRs (I could have used a two-channel snake cable for my ears or just run mono).

I understand that "on paper" and intuitively, that just doesn't seem like a big difference (The trade is running three longer XLR cables for one cat cable and still using a short XLR, but to me, this is one of those situations where the benefit feels so much greater than the sum of the differences. Setup and tear-down both seem markedly neater and easier.

2) Another full-band scenario is where FOH is run off of our IEM rig and/or hired sound is only responsible from the split or to run our mixer.

Here, with the boxes, I've run my ears on 1 and 2 and had gender changers on 3 and 4 for my mic and DI. I can plug in may ears and DI at the pedal board and only need a short XLR for the mic, so, this is a 4 to 1 replacement of cable runs.

3) A third usual scenario is acoustic duo/trio gigs where we use an analog mixer, tops on stands and may or may not use wedges (generally no IEMs or anything wireless) and run a bunch of XLRs.

Last Saturday was a trio gig (no amps, no IEMs), and I put a box on the front line and connected the three mics and my DI and ran the ethercon around to to mixer where I had plugged the fantail ends in, so again, a 4 to 1 replacement of 20 and 25' XLRs. Again, just neater and quicker seeming.


I'm completely sold on the utility of the fantail version of the boxes. At the mixer end, in the case of an IEM rack, they plug directly in and can be left setup and in the rack. On the other end, I'm finding that at least some can be plugged directly in, and any 6' and 10' cables that need to be used just feel so much easier to to carry, handle, setup, and roll than 20-30' XLR cables.

On the cat cables, I'm absolutely not convinced of any significant benefit or need to use ethercon cables or connector carriers for for my use...more demanding use like touring, part of venue kit, part of hired production kit, or other frequent/heavier-duty use, sure, they make sense.

A couple of brands of ethercon cables are ~$1.50/ft. They are thicker than most XLR cables and weigh fully twice as much as some available cat cable for generic use. The shielded Cat6 cable I got has nylon braid and seems at least as robust as any other cable I have, maybe more so.

What I can see doing from here is kind of building up a collection of these and finding the best uses for them over time. Things will get faster, lighter and easier. The rehearsal room where there are spaghetti piles of XLRs might be a project.

I've been using these in an event/wedding band in which we're almost always contracted as a self-contained vendor providing SE, PA, and stage+dance-floor lighting. We had been running traditional stage boxes fed by multiple longer XLRs. Switching to these ethercon boxes significantly streamlined, idiot-proofed, and sped up our set/strike.

Although having only 4 channels per run would be a problem in other applications, it's worked well for us by encouraging 4-channel runs to different destinations all gaff taped securely around the stage perimeter. Using these 4-channel ethercon boxes (and one pass-through box), we run 12 channels of input and 4 channels of output. (We also run another 5-16 channels of input over ethercon from an S16 stage box, although that's a different animal.)

We splurged on cable for three reasons:
  • to get shielded ethercon for phantom powered lines and for DMX lines
  • to get cables in the right lengths for our standard stage layout
  • to get cable that handles/lies flat like mic cable (a real time and headache saver)
The only reliable supplier I could get for very flexible shielded ethercon was pretty expensive. I haven't tested cheaper cabling for how it handles phantom power and DMX, but I'd only consider cheaper cables if they handle as well as our current batch.

I suppose they can fit in various scenarios. I noticed that one of the guys we use for sound has a few of them and it looks like he's working them in where they help and using standard boxes and snakes where they work best for now.

For me these are something on the order of "personal snakes". Sometimes it doesn't matter, sometimes they help some but not in an earth shattering way, and times where I'm responsible for my cable runs and replacing 4 with 1, it feels like a very significant streamlining.

For the most part, people who weren't aware of them who have seen me over the past few weeks using them have been pretty impressed with them. One guy who handles his band's IEM rig the same way I do has already started mapping out a full set up and said he's going to put ethercon jacks on the outside of the rack and keep everything wired on the inside.

this is a pretty cool idea but I'm not completely clear on how it improves things in a huge way. You still have to run XLR cables (although shorter maybe) to the end devices (PA mains, subs, monitors, IEM's etc). So, yes, for the longer runs, instead of a bunch of individual XLRs, you have just a single ethernet/CAT5 run (per every 4 XLR connections), and I guess you could do more peripheral runs around the edge of the stage area. I feel like it could be a good streamlining thing but I guess I'd have to think about this a bit more to really get it. I do hate a messy stage setup with cables (power and XLR) running all over, so I think I see how it could help with that. Seems like you'd have to have your mixer side ethercon boxes racked right with the mixer.

I'm currently running just 12 channels and 4 AUX/monitor outs (plus my recent stereo IEM setup), so I'd have to have 6 ethercon's plus quite a bit of new CAT5 cable.
Can you use any old certified CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6 wire for this application ?

Well, first, what we consider to be "a huge way" can differ, but as I said, this is one of those things where (to me) the benefit works out to be greater than the sum of the individual differences. It can also vary with details of the circumstances, like how involved you are with load-in, set-up, tear-down and load-out you...whether you personally carry, lay-out, roll and stow cables versus just grabbing and using what you need (from a magically provided supply :p ) and someone else takes care of them.

Another example of this effect you may or may not have experienced is using a combo versus a separate head and cabinet. On paper, it's just the difference of one cable, but all aspects of using combo in a gigging context (loading in, setting up, tearing down, loading out, packing and transporting) are experienced as more than "the difference of one cable" by many people. So, it's not a matter of one cable simply being there versus two or three or four, it's everything that goes into using the cables.

As far as still needing to use XLR cables goes, there are two mitigating points. One is if you use the fantail version of the cat boxes, the fantails ends can be plugged directly in on the mixer side (and yes, if you use them the same way all the time, you can leave the mixer end boxes in the rack and connected). On the other end, some number of the fantail ends can be plugged directly in and those that can't only require short cables, which is the second point, that short cables are easier to handle than long cables.

For example, in the case of using boxes for stereo IEM, DI and mic as in the picture above, I had to use one short XLR cable from my mic to the fantail end, and everything else was plugged in directly. The run between the end points was one cable versus 4 long XLR cables. There are differences in the efforts in carrying cables, loading in, unpacking and setting up. The result was setup more quickly and it was neater. After playing, tearing down, rolling cables and packing up was easier. Simply say one cable versus four doesn't capture all of that.

If I were you, assuming you're currently using individual XLR cables, I'd consider how many runs you're doing to each position...are you doing 3 or 4 for yourself? How many drum mics? Is your drummer on wired IEMs?

If you are using all individual XLRs, I find it hard to imagine that you wouldn't find a significant improvement from adding a few of the cat boxes, but that's my perspective...yours might be different.
 
I own, and have used, some of these RJ-45 based snakes. I make my own cables, using foiled twisted pair (FTP) cables, which have a foil wrap around the outside, as well as a drain wire to ground it via the RJ-45 plug. There is also shielded/foiled twisted pair (S/FTP) with a braided shield in addition to the foil wrap. Finally, there’s a third type, which I haven’t personally run across, called foiled/foiled twisted pair (F/FTP), which has a foil wrap around each individual pair in addition to the full cable wrap.

I thought about using S/FTP cable, but could only find it in plenum grade cable, which is both more expensive and a pain to work with, or at least the stuff I’ve worked with professionally was. The jacket was thicker, making it less flexible. It also was also a much looser fit around the wires inside, making it a PITA to put ends on.

Now that I’ve switched to cable ends that don’t require me to pre-cut the wires, that probably wouldn’t be an issue, and the flexibility is enough to sell it on a roll, so I’d have no problem using it if I needed it.

Being able to make my own cables is part of the appeal for me. It’s certainly cheaper, and less messy on stage, than a multitude of XLR cables of varying lengths. Even the XLR cables I do need now are 25 feet long and shorter, vs 25 feet and longer before.

I've been gigging for over 50 years (so I get the combo vs amp/cab reference), but I'm relatively new to running sound from the stage. I started doing it for a few (3) bands that I play with just this year, so my experience and insight with it are admittedly very limited (which is why I've been on the Live Sound thread at TB lately). But I AM the guy hauling the PA gear these days, and while I have been working on developing a mostly "self serve" model with the musicians I play with, it's definitely still a WIP. So no "magically provided" gear boxes for me ;)

I do see how the Cat cable thing could simplify what I'm currently doing and possibly clean up the stage a bit .. particularly to just have 4 primary runs on stage (I'm running a Ui24r and currently just have 12 input channels and 4 Aux/monitor lines (aside from my recent stereo IEM setup). But I just recently invested in a set of 20ft XLR cables and other than the first outbound box/connection in a stage group, I'm still going to have to have 3 other XLR's ... although shorter, to connect the other 3 boxes on each run.

The other thing is that I would likely need to invest in a bigger mixer rack and add the mixer side CAT tails to the bigger rack .... again, just recently invested in the mixer, rack and other items, so for me, there's that.

I'm not naysaying this idea at all ... just pondering how it might make my life easier, and I'm still kind of scratching my head over that. But this is how we figure these things out for our own situations (and budgets).

I've started with one pair of boxes, a couple of cat cables and a pack of gender changers and I'll go from there. That's enough for me to try some things out and get a hands on look at how things work and how doing more with them might work for me. So, if you're interested in it, realize that you don't have to map everything out and buy everything before moving ahead...a relatively small outlay lets you dip your toe in.

For my situation, I'm rarely if ever responsible for setting the stage for any full-band gigs. With my main band, the most common scenario is where house or hired sound has everything other than IEMs, and for that situation one pair of boxes is all that I need, but that one pair offers a decent benefit over using long XLRs.

So far, I'm pretty jazzed about them.
 
For me, one of the advantage of running cat5 cables is that you can have 15', 25', 50' and 100' cables and just take the specific length you would need that night. Way more convenient (and lighter) than always bringing the 100' snake. You can create your own split box (in not commercially available) with 2xXLR and use standard cat5 cables that are available everywhere. Maybe 3xXLR and use a common ground, but I haven't tested.

Me I'm using the same principle but for midi/amp switching/9v power, using homemade rj45 connectors. 10' cat5 cable for home, 15' or 25' cat5 cable for gigs.

I haven't checked and probably won't bother (just keep using shielded cables) but most indications that I've seen (videos and the one sound guy using them who I talked to) have said that the shielded cable is only required in the 1x4 boxes for phantom power. Do you know that not to be true from experience?

It’s definitely something you should put a lot of thought into. Make sure to compare it to traditional stage snakes of comparable capabilities and quality. Particularly if you aren’t making your own Ethercon cables, a traditional snake may end up being a better value.

If FOH is 100 feet out and you don't have physical inputs there, these little buggers are darned helpful.

I have never deployed on on a band gig, only sound co. Of course I already have a bunch of 6x2 and 8x4 drop snakes. If I didn't I would try the little cat5 devices instead.

yeah, I'm getting the idea. I'm still just using a bunch of XLR's for my live band work, not even snakes, so I'd have to sit down and do a plot to really get how this would help in my specific situation. But I do see how it could be valuable with more complicated PA setups. Power is another area that's just kind of a pain too. If I could figure out a way to consolidate/simplify power and XLR connections ... at a reasonable cost, that would be a huge win right now.

The PA I'm running is really just for small/medium gigs where no sound/FOH is provided and I my goal was to take control of sound quality. Since starting this effort a few months ago, I've definitely come to appreciate simplicity and compact layouts wherever possible. All of it is still a work-in-progress for sure, so I'm just going to keep this CAT solution in the back of my head for a bit while I continue to try and master the gear I've got ... and try not to blow my mind on each gig ... and (and and and) try to remember that what I'm really doing there is playing bass in a band and hoping, overall, to have some fun doing it.

I have a bunch of short pig-tail quad boxes. So 1 of those every 10 as necessary.

Depending on how you are setup, How many mics, monitors, etc. a drop snake with signal disto as well as mic inputs is magic for creating a clean stage. I have a 30’ 6x2 hosa for band use. Wish it was 6x4 every once in a while. These and some short interconnects can really clean things up.

The other thing… dymo label tool. One of my drop snakes is labeled Bill Vox, AC Guit, Lisa Vox, Piano, Elec Guit, Kick. Both ends. My bandmates are responsible for the input side. They also carry their own monitors.

Doesn’t sound like much but it really make my life a lot easier.

yeah, I was looking at those multi-outlet extensions just a bit earlier myself. We have a pretty hefty 12ga 6 outlet distro box and I figured I could run 1 multi-outlet string at the front of the stage and 1 at the back. I'll use the front set and the short quad boxes (2?) for mains, monitors and subs, then players can use the back string and their own multi-outlet boxes in the back.

I also hear you about the "self serve" model for PA connections where band members are responsible for their own connections. Before I bought the Ui24r, I pretty much told the three bands I'm using it with that I would build a map/list for them and expect them to connect all their own stuff, and then help me with the PA XLR and Power connections. I used the full PA for a few rehearsals to get everyone used to the new rig and process, and so far, and after only a few gigs all the connections are getting made as hoped. Then the Shows/Snapshots on the Soundcraft allow me to just make tweaks to the settings rather than starting from scratch.

Its working out pretty well, but I'm always looking for ways to improve/streamline, so this whole CAT connect thing caught my eye.
 
i can at least attest that at my new home i have a PC in one room serving as my online music/TV source and a big stereo system and TV in another room, so i got a couple converter things, a fancy active one for HDMI video and one simple RCA adapter set for analog audio, and both work perfectly through the two runs of 100' of ethernet cable i ran along baseboards and over door sills to the living room "hi-fi".

so on-topic, that's a cheap RCA pair to cat6 dongle set, sounds the same through 100' of thin cat6 ribbon cable

@pfschim 1 run in front and 1 in back is what I do on festival stages. 1 quad box handles a mains stack for small shows with powered mains and a rack of lights and the powered wedge or just another quad at each corner. A couple of quads for the front line and a few formthr back line. Lays down quickly and cleans up the stage as well.

I have a long and a short from Home Depot. Rigid brand, Orange and grey that do the backline... For band use, bacline ia 2 outlet bars and a 30 foot extension cord. My needs are simple there.

As far as the CAT snake goes... I would prefer a drop snake. Hosa are reliable and generally available. The 25' 6x2 gets a ton of band use. My bands are quartets with three frontline singers (inluding me). As the mixer box is near me... it keeps a bunch of loose cable out where it belongs - by the signal source and not under my feet...
