Audio Technica AT2020USB

My 16 year old nephew plays guitar. He's helped me out with a few things and I told him I'd get him a piece of gear. He wants an Audio Technica AT2020USB. He says he's done a lot of research and it'd be a good fit for what he wants to do, ie record himself and maybe his friends jamming, maybe overlay some vocals. For what it's worth, he's got a legit gaming computer and is tech savvy.

Is this a good entry level piece of gear, or is there something else that would be a better fit? And will he need any particular software to record with this? It's $150 and I want to make sure that what I get him works for his needs.

That AT2020 is fine if what he wants is a USB mic. I've never met a USB mic that I liked, and have always preferred a non-USB mic paired to an interface, but some folks want to have a single piece of equipment rather than two plus cables.

Thanks for the responses. I went ahead and got him the AT2020 with a focusrite Scarlet 2i2. It was more Monet. But, to your point, a better setup.
