I played thru the cab with the top switch up and down and... I like it in both cases. Maybe with the switch down it's a bit less aggressive in the mids, closer to "flat".
I'm considering to put a couple of coats of Warnex (similar to Duratex) on it, in white. At that point I could probably leave the grills as they are and be relatively happy about the look LOL.
I know it makes no sense as it's a speaker, but as Duke said, I'm italian... look matters.

They should be the same kind of finish, but I definitely want to avoid weird interactions

Far as I can tell, Warnex is safe to use over Duratex. I think Tuffcab is probably safe, but I'm not certain.

Here's the very first Thunderchild 112 prototype, in white Duratex, back in 2010. That stupid white Duratex never did fully dry, it always felt a bit chalky (photo courtesy of Tony Lloyd).

That actually looks pretty classy. You could even wrap the grill for the 3's to match.

Cool thanks. I considered wrapping the mid grill, but I think it looks cool as-is.

that's actually a pair of 4's on my cab, Its the prototype of Dukes very first Hathor model (the 1544). I was one of the Beta testers for this model back in like 2011, loved it so much I ended up buying it!

Just for the record, making modifications to improve the looks of my rather utilitarian cabs does not void the warranty. It may even extend it.

Don't think I've ever mentioned the over the shoulder carry strap I Installed, but that's something you might consider offering as an option. I can simply sling my Hathor over my shoulder and carry everything Into my gigs in one trip...

Hey, I installed that port tube mod you sent me, that definitely improved the low end!
I haven't tried that Acoustic Filter Chamber mod you suggested yet, but will soon...

fwiw I've been overtly in the "don't dig" camp of waffle grille aesthetics, but I had made peace with it, and now kinda like it. Maybe because my H1203 now has a fair amount of "patina", with wood showing through various parts of the cab from so many load-in/load-out. Looking forward to the similarly wearing the Changeling-T whenever it heads west.

I hadn't actually planned on that, but no reason why it can't be done. Worst case scenario, might have to make the recess for the handle on top a little bit narrower, like a half-inch or so, because of the depth required for the magnet on the 5" mids.

Second, I'm glad to read that you can make the top handle more narrow because I have a GK MB200 that's pretty diminutive and the feet kept falling in the small gully where that nice handle is. Also, just for fun and because I'm weird, I was even thinking of getting the Trace Elliott ELF which is even smaller.

What is the Changeling 112? Has anyone posted pics?

The Changeling 112 is basically a Hathor 1203 with a second, rear-firing 3" mid in its own little open-format chamber. Here are a couple of pictures:

If you look closely, you'll see three switches. The middle switch is labeled "0" and "-7" (you can't see the latter from this angle). Its purpose is to shelve down the rear-firing mid by about 7 dB, for situations where stage volume is an issue. Normally the rear-firing mid is about 3 dB down relative to the front-firing mid over most of the spectrum, so maybe I should have labeled them "-3" and "-10".

Anyway, the idea is related to open-back guitar cabs. You know how a good open-back guitar cab sounds richer and more enveloping than a closed-back cab? Well, the Changeling format leans heavily in that direction, but without the drawbacks of an open-back guitar cab: muddy low end, and sometimes too much stage volume (we have that -7 dB switch).

Something else I had in mind was, making it easier for your fellow musicians to hear what you're doing. For some genres (like "conversational" jazz), and for jam sessions, that can be beneficial.

Since we lose a little bit of internal volume, I went with three small ports instead of the one big port that you had in your Hathor 1203 cabs. With all three ports open, we actually have a little bit more low end than with the one big port, because the tuning frequency is a bit higher. And with one small port plugged, the tuning frequency is virtually identical to the single-port 1203. In fact current-build 1203s now have the three small ports. This raised the weight by about one pound, due to the additional bracing needed, so now the Hathor 1203 is a 26-pound cab.

I think the Changeling format is my future, and plan to do a bunch of different Changeling cabs, including a "112T", which uses a Taller box than the regular version, same footprint, giving us a bit more low end.
