Audition tips?

We once auditioned a guy who had... a teardrop tattoo. Our drummer, after the guy left, excitedly told us that meant he'd killed someone in prison. I was skeptical, so we looked it up. Turns out it doesn't necessarily mean he'd killed someone while in prison, but...most of the things it would likely mean involved things that would happen...while you were in prison. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but we passed. So, be on the lookout for....things that don't seem quite right.

Some of the nicest people I know have more tattoos than bare skin. Come to think of it, the only 2 in our house of 8 that don't have at least one tattoo on their face is me and the 12yo girl. You can't always judge a book blah blah.

I just bowed out. It's more commitment than I'm comfortable with. Main reason is I have trouble driving at night and it wouldn't be fair to have the group rely on me.

Had eye surgery over the summer and my vision is better than it was but I realize this week I'm not comfortable driving at night. I apologized and thanked them. I guess a cover band isn't for me.

Back to jamming here at my studio. It was a learning experience for me.

Cool. Michael B

Sorry to hear that, but better to realize this now than later, I suppose. Maybe you can put together a jam or something with some other people on weekends during the day.

Hey all,
I have an audition Thursday.
Cover band. Decent players, similar age and older etc. Good songs overall. P Bass is tip top and using Rumble Stage 800. Gear is ready to go. Learning a dozen songs for audition.

It is my first foray into cover band territory.

Any audition tips or funny stories?

Cool. Michael B

- know the material
- be flexible
- LISTEN!

The issue wasn't that he had a tattoo. It was that he was (as far as we could tell) an ex con.

Ok audition report:

I played half a dozen songs I knew better. We worked out 2 more. Commited to the same number more for second visit.

People were super cool. Band leader was organized and corrected a part here and there. That actually went fairly well.

I had a ton of fun to boot. Awesome. Thanks again to all here for support.

Glad it went well, but don't forget to value your own time. You learned 20 songs, played only 6-8, and they want a 2nd round with an additional 6-8 songs? That's a lot of good faith effort on your part, just saying don't let them take advantage of that good faith by wasting your time.

Yeah good advice. Only one new one is not one of the initial 20.

Some excellent advice in this thread. Glad your audition went well and that you told them about your night driving issue.

If regular gigging is important to you, use social media and the band's (and perhaps venues' websites) to check whether a band really has gigging experience. I've found a few "currently gigging but retooling" bands that misrepresented themselves or considered open mic nights as gigs.

Also, if band members split costs for rehearsal space, make sure you'll gig enough to cover this. I recently left a group after it was apparent this would continue to be a negative investment.

So glad this went well and that you were able to concentrate on the ones you were most comfortable with. Can't wait to hear how the next session goes. If they're asking you back that's a great sign!
