Auditioning with your own material?

Hi folks,

I've got an audition coming up in a couple of weeks for backing band job. The artist is some New York keys player and singer coming over to spend a few months in London - I've been dealing with the management/PR company and they're being very obtuse about details of the artist or the music.

They've asked me to audition with a contempory piece that showcases my skills (not too much of a problem) and one of my own compositions. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before, and how did you deal with it?

I've been doing session work and depping for a long time now and I don't think I've actually written my own music for almost a decade - I've certainly never written any "bass solo" compositions!

Just interested to hear people thoughts on this.

Well, it would seem that they are interested in having someone around who can be a creative partner, not just a player. That's good. I wonder if they mean specifically a bass solo, or a tune you've written. That might be a little easier to cull together, rather than a solo number. Just make sure you have a lead sheet. Good luck!
