Hey TalkBass,
Quick question here....
I need a new speaker logo plate for my AVATAR B-2126 bass cabinet.
I went to the Avatar webiste only to find that they are all listed for the same price of $29.00 regardless of the size or style you may be in need of. Not that I'm ragging on AVATAR-I REALLY love my B-2126 but..... :thumbsdown:
Am I trippin' when I think that's a pretty steep amount when they REALLY vary in size?

I good friend of mine just invented a guitar cab..... thing..... that has his logo on it. He had the cabs manufactured right here in the states (presumably at a higher cost than dealing with overseas manufacturers).

He only got 20 units made so far..... sort of a prototype run if you will.

The added cost of the logo badges per unit was $9.00. And they are metal. Plus, his cab manufacturer doesn't make logo badges. They had to source them elsewhere. And THAT company had to make a profit. So, with profit for the manufacturer of the badges, AND some mark up for the cab company, his cost for metal badges was $9.00.

If he got 20 made here in the states, I guarentee you his cost is MUCH higher than Avatar's cost for his logos.

Point is, in my view, Avatar's price is ludicrous. He could sell them at $15 or $16 and still more than double his money. If I had to guess, his cost couldn't possibly be more than $3-$4 per unit. And it could be less than that.

But here's the thing. Does the area where the logo was look bad? If not, leave it off. Or go a salvage yard and snag an old Chevy or Mustang (or other automotive) script and slap it on there. I wouldn't give a crap about the Avatar name.

Man, four decades or so of K/Wal-Mart sending your nickels and dimes to China and someone's cousin's fiancé's best friend's daughter saying she got a way more screaming deal than she did for some component for her little passion project has really skewed what people think it takes to manufacture anything- particularly in low volumes. That, or y'all are still paying $0.12 per gallon for gasoline and your mortgage payment is only $30 a month for your modest little 6k sq/ft split level on 80 acres.

I agree that $29 is a predatory price for a logo badge and personally, I wouldn't pay it, but YMMV...some folks will pay extra for a T-shirt that has a specific logo on it. That said, in general, production costs are not the biggest part of the overall cost of stocking replacement parts. And logo badges are a sort of special category; some manufacturers seem to make them dear and difficult to acquire to keep them from appearing on products they didn't actually make. I like the idea of repurposing a badge from a car...I'm going to keep my eyes open for an SS-396 badge for a home-brew project. And I have seen a fair number of sexy-girl/chrome-silhouette mud-flap ornaments on gear around here, but I live in Texas.

BTW... Those "SS-396" badges are ALL OVER eBay brother! (just an FYI :))
