Average batter life

I change my batteries once a year. Do you keep your patch cord plug in? If so that could be your problem.
Doesn't sound right at all, you probably have a short in your wiring.
I change mine every 6 months to be on the safe side. I put new ones in my basses and the old ones in the smoke detectors

+1. I change every six months too. But I use the old batteries in my tuner.

I'd do some searches here. There have been cases of factory basses (Yamaha's in particular) that have been incorrectly wiried such that the preamp is turned "on" all the time instead of being switched by the cord being plugged in and acting as a jumper between the ground and the battery negative. The result is a short battery life of around 2 weeks.
Always unplug your bass when you're not using it. (It's safer that way, anyway).
Like everyone says, a battery will generally last 6m - 2 year depending on the usage and the bass.

Your jack could be mis-wired if it's always been this way, or there could be a fault in the pre, if it was OK in the past.
Note, most active basses in passive mode, still have the preamp powered by the battery. If this wasn't the case, then switching to active is likely to cause a huge thump through your rig as the pre is powered up.
Bartolini's preamps lasts about 500 hours. Aguilar's OBP's last 324 hours. Some of the Noll preamps i've looked at (the non-parametric ones) last around 800 hours. And theres one seymour duncan preamp (don't remember which) which lasts something like 1000 hours. EMG's BT preamp lasts around 625 hours. EMG's BQ preamp lasts 170 hours.
This is all taken from their respective websites. So, the battery life can vary quite a bit, depending on the preamp.
