Avoiding Bass Ignorance

I play punk and hardcore mainly, and I've used most of my basses in a gig situation, so take your pick (these have all been gigged at one time or another):

Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray HH - Fretted (2006),
Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray HH - Fretless (2006),
Ibanez EDA-905 RRF (2001),
Ibanez BTB-406QM TK (2002),
Ibanez ATK-400 TB (2003),
Ibanez TRB-50BK (1994),
Aria Pro-2 JB-600 (1978),
Aria Pro-2 Magna Series bass with added Dimarzio Model P and Model J pickups.


(list is just copied from my profile and non-gigging basses have been removed)

You can use any bass, it's how you use it and knowing how to set your amp and get in the mix that counts.

So true! I can't believe I forgot about the Hi-Flyer! Guitarists AND bassists rock these. I have serious on again/ off again Hi-Flyer GAS ever since I saw the bassist for the Beatnik Termites rocking one.:p

Yeah! I'm in a band with the lead guitarist/singer of the Termites. That bassist (of the Termites) plays a true Mosrite! He also has a side project where his g/f plays bass and she uses a Univox... THEY'RE the ones that sold me on the Hi Flyers!

Something feels really cool about them that the Eastwood doesn't seem to capture.

Bummer!!!

I like the Univoxes the best as well.. even over the Mosrites! The Aria Diamonds are basically Hi Flyers with J pups in them...

The Termites, as in the Scottish Psychobilly band? (I'm guessing not seeing you claim to play with the guitarist/singer!)

But, if it is, I've chatted away to their singer, he used to work at the parlour where I get my tattoo's (he now has his own tattoo place).

Or is there some American band by the same name that I can't find on t'internet?

If you don't know about it; every year our label, Insubordination Records ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]), throws a HUGE 3 day pop-punk fest. You're just in NJ and Baltimore's a pretty easy treck! Awesome line up this year (Teenage Bottle Rocket, Less Than Jake, Dirtbike Annie, MC Chris, The Queers, Smoking Popes, The BEatnick Termites (duh).. etc etc etc)!!!

Last year i played the part of the bass-dork and actualy wrote a post here on TB about the different basses i saw during the weekend, to sort of hammer the point of "there is no PUNK bass". I saw P's, J's, Rays (H and HH), Hi Flyers, Grabber, Ripper, Tbird, An Iceman, a couple Rics, PJs, Hoppus Sigs, Warwicks, Ibanez, G&L, Fender, Squier, Gibson....... and a RITTER!!1! Honestly, the trend seemed to be... younger bands were mostly using Jazz basses while the older punk bands all used Ps. I thought the coolest part was that because a backline was provided, i got to hear the differences of the tones in the basses themselves....

Well I'm late to the party but, I'm still givin' my 2 cents.

I'm a punk metal hybrid player I play with a pick and two basses.

My first bass and go to for more mellow sounding punk (aka Ramones, Less Than Jake, etc.) is my Yamaha RBX170 a P/J bass lots of great sounds for nice clean tones from time to time I add a pedal for a little more grit.

My second choice for more archachic, "in your face", heavy punk (aka Anti Flag, The Exploited, Leftover Crack etc.) is my newly bought ATK305 that I got in Febuaury it is really good at pushing whatever it's plugged into wether a PA system, half stack, or combo to Hell. It's great for gut thumping punk no pedal needed it sounds huge.

I play in a punk band and i'm partial to double humbuckers (a Warwick corvette $$ and a discontinued Laguna) if only because of the beautiful way the notes break up through my big muff but it also gives the essential punch on the bridge pickup. while these two basses follow through you have to be careful because of some double humbuckers tendencies to be a little booming and excessively muddy on the neck.

My alltime FAVORITE punk tone has come from an Alembic Epic. Set neck, bass and treble controls. Capable of some very different tones than the classic "Alembic" tone. You can find a beater Epic that plays great for around a grand. Through an overdriven Traynor YBA-1A and a single EV-15 it can be quite pungent. You would not be sorry.........

Every time I saw the Ramones Dee Dee was always playing a white Precision bass....this was before squire of mij so I'm almost positive they were standard 60's or 70's p basses....I read in the link below that he later had a couple of black ones and even at least one sunburst (their equipment was stolen several times)...later he switched to esp's and played a variety of them...an orange bass with a spider on it and a yellow tbird style....

I remember seeing more than a few EBO-3's being played by fellow punksters back in the day as well!
