Award Shows (Grammys) - Hate 'em

I honestly don't care for Kanye really. Are y'all talkin' 'bout the part where he wanted them to stop the music while he was givin' his speech? I mean, can't blame him there really. He was talkin' 'bout his mama who passed away recently. I'd probably be the same way. If it's that part we are talkin' about...

Steve

His normal rambling about 'deserving' a Grammy just as much as the next guy then segueing to his mom which should have been more important than talking about whether you 'deserve' a Grammy!

"Rambling" is a very diplomatic way to describe his speech, demonstrating both his very limited command of the English language and his chip on the shoulder attitude. By the time that was over, he had gone well past his allotted time, and the play off music came on......so he copped an attitude again, this time towards the folks that were simply doing their job, attempting to keep the show somewhat on schedule.

After all, why should he care that many of the other entertainers may want to say a few words of thanks as well? Why should he be concerned that a national broadcast should be somewhat on schedule? Certainly, someone else of lesser importance than him should be cut short of their allotted time......after all, he is more important than anyone else. :rollno:

No doubt, he's a complete jerk! :spit:

He deserves ZERO respect. :scowl:

I'll stop just short of wishing ill will, it's not my nature, but man, I'm teetering on that too. :ninja:

Yeah, sorry, I got carried away there. Haha. I think I took it too far, but the sentiment remains. I just thought it was in poor taste to talk about the other nominees the way he did. I can't imagine what is going through his head, but there is no sign of humility there.

No need to apologize, I don't think you went too far.

One of my favorite moments of the evening came later, when Vince Gill nailed him. I forget the exact quote, but it was something like, "Wow, I just was handed an award by a Beatle. That's never happened to you, has it Kanye?"

:D

It's so funny how (for example) jazz purists will say the award means nothing year after year then when someone like Herbie Hancock wins one it is "justified" and a great honor he did. So since he won one, all of the others they gave out aren't crap anymore that went to pop artists? Or is Herbies award "better" than the ones the pop artists got. Wonderful elitists.

Just an observation. I dislike awards shows. I like musicians. Opinions stink either way.

I didn't consider it a rebuke. I was simply responding to your post, which was factually inaccurate. Yes, they received recognition late in life -- too late for some -- in large part due to Berry Gordy's treatment and handling of them. I'm not happy about that either. But I do give the industry a little credit for the recognition they've provided.
In FACT, I normally do try to gather actual information before just posting uninformed information. In this case, I had searched the Grammy site for James Jamerson, and come up with nothing.

So, this evening after reading your information, I have gone back and searched for the Funk Brothers. Interesting Result.

You are correct that the Funk Brothers were recognized for two awards in 2002 following the release of Allan Slutzky's labor of love SITSOM. Well deserved all the way around.

BUT, here is the key point: the awards only recognize the LIVING (at that time) Funk Brothers.

Named were:
R&B: Chaka Khan & The Funk Brothers (Richard "Pistol" Allen, Jack Ashford, Bob Babbitt, Johnny Griffith, Joe Hunter, Uriel Jones, Joe Messina, Eddie Willis), artists.

Film/TV/Media:Allan Slutsky, Harry Weinger & Ted Greenberg, compilation producers. Kooster McAllister & Ted Greenberg, engineers/mixers.

Please take note of the FACT that James Jamerson is NOT recognized.

I'm sure that this is because these awards can only be given to LIVING recipients.

So, I stand by my original statement, which was factually accurate and properly researched in every sense of the phrases. As the situation stands, Jamerson remains unrecognized.

I still beg to differ. I'll grant that the soundtrack Grammys may have been awarded only to the living Funk Brothers. But the 2004 Grammy "Lifetime Achievement Award" definitely recognized both living and deceased members of the Funk Brothers, including Jamerson and Benny Benjamin. Lifetime Achievement awards can be and often are issued posthumously. Here's an article from Grammy magazine at the time:
http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Culdesac/Stars/fbgrammy.html

My point isn't to claim that they've been treated fairly all around. They haven't, and I think we're on the same page about that. And I lay the blame for that almost entirely at Berry Gordy's feet. He didn't give them proper credit on recordings, he more or less abandoned them when he moved Motown headquarters to California, and he hasn't really done anything to recognize them publicly (i.e. Jamerson wasn't invited to the Motown 25 show). But I do feel like the "awards" side of the overall industry has stepped up. Between the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award and the individual inductions of Jamerson and Benny Benjamin into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I feel like they've done about as much as they can realistically do. That was the point of my (perhaps too snippy) comment "what else are you looking for?"

I think we're both preaching the same thing. No issues on my side.

However, I still think it is a bit odd and sad that ONCE AGAIN, and for whatever reason, Jamerson gets left out. Admittedly, the Grammy thing may not amount to much. But, here is the seminal guy who left us so much.... and he gets left out.

Anyhow, us bass guys know better.:)

Edit: For some reason the Lifetime Achievement Award doesn't search on the Grammy site; so perhaps, that is part of the issue. I would really like to see how that was worded and who specifically they cited. Wikipedia is fine, but they just reference the Funk Bros for the award and then go on to define them as we understand their lineup. That doesn't make me feel real warm and fuzzy that the Grammy's had the same wisdom. Anyhow, I hope I am incorrect. I just can't find it on the site.
