Awesome P pups

Yeah, you'll never get back the money you drop in a Squier but they are excellent and fun to tinker on, modify and practice. I just picked up a Squier Affinity Jazz for $65 on craigslist in flawless condition. Sat in a girls closet since '07, took one bass lesson and quit. It's a great bass and awesome with the new flats I put on and a slight neck adjustment. Granted, it doesn't have the buttery action of an American made Fender or the oomph but adequate nonetheless.
Squiers Made in Indonesia are dated by the first 2 numbers after the letters in the serial number, in your case, I'm guessing
CV98xxxxxxx, is 1998
Made in China is not the same as Made in Japan for obvious reasons
Made in Indonesia and Made in China aren't the same either as China is the main land and Indonesia is the islands

I have a squire P that I through EMG's in a while back and a badass II bridge on. Now I like the EMG's but I am looking for something with a little more umffp and tonal shaping. I'd like to keep the warm feeling of this bass but I'd like to punch me in the face tooif I'd like to. What are some suggestions y'all have for some strong pups? I'd also like to add a preamp if possible. Maybe something like an auilar. I was thinking about swaping the neck out for a graphite neck on it eventually. Maybe. So what are your thoughts fellow TB'ers?

I think both will not disappoint whatever they are asked to wind.
Knowing bassculture quite well ( I use a '51 style P pick up of his as well as a couple humbuckers in a couple of basses), I speak from experience.
A friend of mine uses haeussel and is equally happy.

Made in China Squier i believe a manufactured by Cort and is not the same as a MIJ.

I've got a Dimarzio Model P (DP122) in my 93 Ibanez and I'm pretty stoked about it. One thing I highly recomend is setting up a push/pull volume for your pick up. If your looking for tonal variety this will help a lot. My Model P has Strong lows and mids. theres not a lot of highs but the ones that are there stand out pretty well. Thats what I get when in series mode. In parallel it has a more traditional sound with a big more low and clear mid.

You also may want to speak with Dave at SGD Luthiere about custom pups. He can probably make you something tailored to you. Just depends on your budget.

The Antiquity 2 are bright... Not in a bad way.. but the top end sems to go up to almost alembic pickup area.. very open up top compare to other P bass type pickups.... They still sound OK in a mix though.... TO me they have an ever so slight upper mid scoop compared to the Fender 62... But the Antiquity sounds closer and more like my old 40 something year old fender P bass...

The Fender 62 and Duncan SB1 are thicker and if possible the SB1 and Fender 62 sound just about the same to me..
You are right about the antiquity being a little less in your face... But i sort of like that in my Alleva Coppolo P bass.. It is so airy up top that some engineers cant believe it is a P bass. They almost think it is a J bass..

ohhh ok, since i have a maple board and play with a light pick alot, that must be why i thought it was too "thin". i actually wasnt even a big fan of the jazz bass until the past year, got one with a rosewood fretboard and 60's style pickups that just sounds so good with pick and fingers. thanks!
