Doesn't matter who invented it, or how they did it; I'd still flunk it. 
I bet their kids still said "I'm never gonna use this, WHY do I have to learn it?".
I bet their teachers told the same math joke my teacher told us.

I had a teacher who used to say "When it doubt, whip it out!". He was, of course, referring to a slide rule but I don't even want to imagine how that would go over in today's climate.
