Bach on 7-string bass (google video)

Just getting around to commenting on that clip now. That's great! I like it even better than my Goldberg Variation bass duet. Telemann was really great. I really should get into some more of his stuff. Biber was great too. As was Vivaldi, of course.

Thanks! Most late Baroque counterpoint people study is Bach's, but Telemann is something else - there are definitely some harmonies in there that struck me to be very unlike that which Bach would do. Bach is the master, but that doesn't mean there weren't other composers that had a knack for the art of counterpoint.

Your Goldberg Variations is really nicely played, but theres something about that upper register of the 7 string thats too harsh. You're bending some notes just a tad which amplifies this effect, and at times detracted severely from the music. But still I enjoyed it, good job.

Thanks. Yeah, I put a little too much vibrato in there on some of those notes. It's a bad habit of mine. I need to not bend it quite that much. It's harder doing subtle vibrato.

The high F is a plain steel string and it does result in some harsh overtones. I've tried deadening it up in a little in the past by sticking something under the string at the bridge but I haven't done that in a while.

I really should re-record that. I was pressed for time since I was already late with finishing it up for the TalkBass sampler. There are some notes in there that aren't fretted so well.

I think they're generally tuned in fourths with a Major 3rd in the middle. Kinda like a guitar.

Haha, you're probably thinking of the David J. Grossman that plays for the New York Philharmonic. He shares the same middle initial as me too.

I've had my Bach web page up since 1996. The Bass section was probably added in 1997 or 1998. I completely redid the bass section about a year ago but haven't really added much since then. My six-string bass page was put up in 1997 originally but was superceded by http://www.guitar-and-bass.com/ which expands on the content of my original site and also supports guitar and 5-string bass. I sold the sixstringbass.com domain to another TalkBass'er (at cost).

I am getting really close to recording a CD with the 2nd Partita for Solo Violin and the 1st and 5th Cello Suites. I plan to perform the 2nd Partita in May opening up for Michael Manring, Jean Baudin and Jeff Schmidt in Berkeley, CA. More info on that is available at http://www.unpronounceable.com/solobassnight/ . The date hasn't been set yet but it will be in May.

Thanks again! I'm not too happy with the stuff at my site but I've come a long way since then so hopefully the CD I record for that show in May will be better.
