Bad Idea? 200w cab w/ Orange TB 500

Would be totally fine for any gig I play, but I don't play with crazy loud stage volume.

You need to give more clues about the non PA gigs and how loud your band is. The answer is always, "it depends".

Genz recommends them as a stack for a bigger stage with Shuttle 6.2, says they are 97dB sensitivity, not shabby. I don't think you would have to max them out to keep up to the acoustic drums.

Mathematically 2 cabs is 124dB @ 1m with 250W total. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I'm just wondering if both cabs need to be rated for the wattage my amp puts out, even in parallel. If i'm using a 500 watt head with two 12" 8ohm cabs in parallel do they both need to handle close to 500 watts individually? Again, my head would be switched to 4ohm mode (I assume).

Output wattage is split between connected cabs. There is only wattage when a cab is connected, before that it is only voltage. Cabs make power with amp voltage.

They won't take all the power your amp has to offer, 250W RMS each, plus peak wattage of godknowswhat. It has a volume knob. Plenty of other higher rated cabs would also fart out with your amp if you were silly about it.

Don't be silly about it. As Jimmy says, "if it sounds like it's about to blow up it probably is!". Wind on master volume until your heavy accented notes bust out into distortion, then back off. You better be wearing earplugs.

No flapping is good, but if you're running a super middly sound you could cook your speakers from heat. If you're lucky you might notice you are getting quieter after playing hard. Back off. That's your voice coils getting hot. The usual reaction (turning up some more) fries them.

I wouldn't have those sorts of problems because I don't need to drown out a hard hitting drummer just to be heard over a cranked guitar stack.

So.. If I decide to pick up the two 12s, would powering two 8ohm 200 watt cabs with a 500 watt head make sense? My understanding is that two 8ohm cabs would equal a 4ohm load, and my head has a switch for 8ohm/4ohm - but would having two 200 watt cabs actually handle 400 watts? Sorry, this is basic stuff but I just don't have a lot of experience with it..

That's a very strong Yes!!! Switch to 4ohm and hook up both 8ohm cabs. That will give you the full 500w of glory

I doubt you make it past 11 with both of those hooked up.

My latest rig. Orange TB 1000 with 2 Berg HD 112's 8 ohms. I really love this new setup. I also have a DNA DNS-410 4 ohm cab, but I'm probably not going to use it unless I really need that 410 punch in the gut onstage.

I'm running my TB500 w/ an Ampeg SVT210 right now & it's fine. Just be wary of the volume knob and you'll be alright.

And be wary of other people who might also crank it up.
