Baked beans

My English wife likes beans on toast. Straight up baked beans are too sweat for my taste. We make this stuff that we call "Beans-with-that", as in "you want beans with that?" Cut up several strips of bacon into smaller chunks, fry it up with some chopped onions, drain the fat, add one can of baked beans and one can of Ranch Style beans. Heat it up and eat it with any kind of BBQ. Good stuff!

:eyebrow:

You may be eating the wrong beans...

Baked beans, if you're talking about the canned-in-ketchup kind...

Any sort of salted meat will do. Mix in sliced sausages or cubed spam or ham chunks or any other salt-preserved meat and heat up over low fire.

I eat that with rice, and it's a poor man's meal (when i can't be bothered to cook properly or eat out).

Frying the bread is the way to go! A valuable component of the full English that I had forgotten in my previous post. Beans on toast or fried bread is a quick and easy meal for even the most haphazard of cooks.

I wondered what the hell to do with fried bread. It doesn't butter well like toast does. I tried just eating it plain but it wasn't really palatable that way.

I had no idea you could get beans packaged this way:

Time to scour the supermarket!

Well you don't butter it like toast, rather you fry it in butter so that the butter is soaked into the bread. You can also fry it in the left over bacon fat and have bacony bread!

But I suppose taste varies from person to person.

Now I like a fry-up & I'm partial to a nice Pie, but even my arteries clang at the thought of that!

Stuff 'em! Assuming a good doorstep sawn off a Bloomer, how much butter exactly?

Proper baked beans do not come from a can. You need pork & beans, mustard, ketchup, bbq sauce, brown sugar, cane syrup, salt, pepper, and chopped onion. Mix all that up to taste in a baking dish....cover the entire thing with bacon...cook at 350 for 2-3 hours.
Serve with smoked pork ribs or pulled pork and potato salad, made with mayo, mustard, bolied eggs and pickle relish.

Thank me later.lol

It was less a matter of taste than knowing what to do with fried bread.

I encountered it at a breakfast buffet in a hotel in Enfield (in the north of London). At first I'd thought they made the French toast awfully dry. ;) The scrambled eggs weren't quite runny enough to soften this slice of lightly browned pumice and it didn't submit well to cutting with a table knife. I decided not to scour my plate with it when I finished.

Absolutely. That's similar to how I make them. The can is merely a starting point. :D

No, you put them in a crockery beanpot with a good fitting lid. Dig a hole in the ground, load hot charcoals into the hole, set the pot atop the coals, and bury the pot. Let it bake for about 4 to 6 hours. Dig up the pot and serve.

Sounds like some bad bread right there:D
