Balder amps?

Recently bought a Balder Hurricane amp and I need to have it worked on.

Does anyone have any experience with these amps? Any lead to a schematic, owner's or repair manual would be appreciated. I understand Balder was bought by Nady and the amps rebranded. The amp was made in the mid '80's...

Thanks,

Phil

Wow! Talk about an obscure amp! Google yielded zip!

Combo? Head + cab? Transistor? Tube? Hybrid?

Have you looked inside the amp to see if there's a schematic or any info at all?

Can you post pics to jog some memories?

Thanks.

I haven't heard the name Balder amplifiers in 30 years.

I remember seriously considering (for 3 seconds) buying one back in 1979. They were made in Sweden and the particular model I considered (for 3 seconds) had a power output rating of 300 watts RMS which was huge at that time, especially for the size of the amp. They seemed to disappear as quickly as they came.

Bought a new Acoustic 220 head and 406 cabinet instead and was glad I did.

Wow - does that bring back memories! I had a Balder Thunder amplifier back in the 80's. Absolutely one of the best amps I ever owned soundwise; clean, powerful, fantastic at cutting a mix onstage. However, it heated up and blew power transistors like crazy. I eventually stuck it in a rack and mounted a fan and had trouble free operation for 5 years, and then it was stolen from my car. I needed a Bryston 3B and Ashley preamp to replace it.

I doubt you need a schematic - a good tech should be able to sort it out in short order.

Hey, thanks all for chiming in. It's an obscure amp for sure. This one is just a power amp (toroid power transformer rated at 300W) and a crossover. High end is line out and low end goes to the power amp. You can plug in directly to the power amp if the crossover isn't your bag.

Amp distorts at any volume, doesn't matter what input level. Crossover high out is clean. No schematic inside, just alot of power transistors (all SS). Previous owner said his tech told him there's two internal amps that are internally bridged. Power amp distorts thru both 8 ohm cabs I have.

Reviving this thread. I just acquired a Balder Thunder Bass amp head. 300 watts at 4 ohms. I just previewed it in the garage. I agree, trying to get a totally clean sound from it is near impossible. I switched from a 2x12 4 ohm speaker to a 2x10 speaker and immediately blew both internal 6 amp fuses. Darn. I won't use that speaker cord again. Anyway I'm dead in the water until I can get to town for more fuses. I will be back after further investigation
